Odysseus Leader Analysis
Odysseus displays many traits of leadership and other strengths throughout the Epic. First, whenever Odysseus's crew obeys his orders, it demonstrates Odysseus's leadership. Homer's text states that the crew, “delivered me from my restraint”. Since the crew follows out his orders, it represents their respect for him. As well as exhibiting signs of strengths, he also portrays character weaknesses. As the Epic continues, Odysseus exposes signs of weakness. Odysseus unmasks his trait of selfishness by putting his crew in jeopardy in order to hear the sirens. Homer’s Epic proclaims the following evidence,”Me only she permits those strains to hear,” and, “and by no struggle to be loos’d of mine,” which both quotes support the idea that his

The tone in the epic poem is bright in the beginning when Homer writes “Helios’ burning rays” and “the sun at high noon.” As the poem progresses, it takes on an ominous tone that shows Odysseus’ self-control as he “stop[s] the ears of [his] comrades one by one” with beeswax. He also has his men “[bind him] hand and foot in the tight ship…lashed by ropes to the mast.” These two examples show Odysseus fighting against his desire to listen to the Siren’s…

In lines 30-55 in the “Odyssey”, Odysseus is posed with the threat of the Lotus Eaters. To illustrate, the Lotus Eaters offer his men the Lotus, a flower, but it makes those who eat it forget who they are, “Browsing on/That native bloom, forgetful of their homeland.”(Line 46&47). This provides Odysseus and his crew with threatening obstacle in their stay on the island. The Lotus was a problem because if they ate the flower, they were doomed to stay on the island, never wanting go back home. To demonstrate Odysseus’ leadership, he drags three of his forgotten men onto the ships and tells the rest of the crew “No one taste/ The Lotus, or you lose your hope of home.” (Lines 51&52). This illustrates Odysseus’ leadership skills when posed with a…

In the epic poem The Odyssey, Homer utilizes plot to develop a major motif, the repercussions of succumbing to temptation. One of the most memorable instances when Odysseus gave into temptation was at the island of the cyclops. He gave into his curiosity and he entered the cyclops's home. The aggressive cyclops came home and ate multiple men. Odysseus’s lust for Kleos is also a temptation. He surrendered to it when he reveals his identity to Polyphemus, bringing the wrath of Poseidon upon him and his crew. Only Odysseus survived. Another example of Odysseus giving into temptation is the Siren ordeal, when he insisted on listening to the Siren's mesmerizing song. The crew were made to plug their ears, so that they could sail safely by the Sirens’…

In the episode “The Sirens” of Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus is a strong-headed leader whose determination to successfully pass the sirens is only possible with the help of his men, proving that the mutual relationship between Odysseus and his men leads to success. Following Circe’s advice about overcoming the Sirens, Odysseus declares to his men that they must “tie [him] up, tight as a splint… and if [he] shouts and begs to be untied, take more turns of the rope” (695-698). Odysseus incorporates his guidance from Circe by instructing his men to do as they are told, proving they obey to Odysseus’ commands in order to gain achievement. Allowing himself to hear the song, Odysseus understands that his men cannot let him go; therefore, it is necessary…

Odysseus has been doing this through the whole book to his crew. The first major time was when he and his crew went into the cave of the cyclops. This next quote was right before Odysseus and his crew were going to stab the cyclopes in the eye. “‘Courage- no panic, no one hang back now!’”(9.422) Even thought they knew that they had to get out of that situation but yet he wanted to seem heroic but really he almost got everyone killed. This is also showing that he is just a guy that wants to to be know for saving everyone and not known for a good leader. My next quote comes from when Odysseus asks his crew to go into the woods to find Circe’s halls. None of the men want to go into the woods because they just got done with rowing a ship for days on days. Odysseus talks them into going into the woods finally but they don't want to. “And so, numbering off my band men-at-arms into two platoons...” (10.222-23) Odysseus had no clue what was going to be on the island but he sent out two groups of men to find out who lived on the island and if they could stay there. He has no clue of who lives here if they are nice or not so really he just a whole bunch of men into war empty handed. My finally quote is when he had to be the only man to live through the sirens. So he plugged ears of his crew members and had them tie him to then mass of the boat. “...I stopped the ears of my comrades one by one.”(12.193) Odysseus could have whent around the island but Odysseus had to be the greatest man alive to hear the Sirens and still be able to tell the…

    Odysseus Leadership Essay

Odysseus, in Homer’s The Odyssey, displays both strong and weak leadership skills in certain situations. Odysseus stays protective and caring but isn’t very trusting or open to his crew. He doesn’t tell his crew about what the prophet said, and what was in the bag from the Wind King. When the crew was on the Island of the Sun God, Odysseus blatantly said for them not to touch the cattle. Yet he failed to explain the consequences. Since his actions illustrate both strong and weak leadership, each even affected the way Odysseus would lead the crew.…

Does trust alone determine a good leader? Odysseus was the king of Ithica and he went with an army to the Trojan War, and then he had tried to return home over a vast long journey. Odysseus and his men encountered many setbacks on their journey home. On top of all that Odysseus and his men did not get along at all. Odysseus was not a strong leader and ultimately contributed to the destruction of his own men because, he had blindly sacrificed six of his men, and he had not trusted them with the contents of the bag of winds.…

A sign of Odysseus's leadership is when he was facing the heard ships from the Cattle of the Sun God. He knew that they had eaten the cattle so he said "I withdrew to the interior to pray the gods, for hope." (P.789) This shows that he knew that his men had messed up so he decided to help them by praying to the gods which shows that he tried to help his men. Another sign of leadership is when he sacrificed himself to keep his men safe. "I carried the wax along the line , and laid it thick into their ears." (P.784) This shows how much he cares about his men and how he will sacrifice himself for his crew.…

One of the traits that Odysseus demonstrates is courage. This is displayed in many situations such as when Odysseus demands hospitality from the Cyclops: “It was our luck to come here; here we stand beholden for your help, or any gifts you give- as custom is to honor strangers. We would entreat you, great Sir, have a care for the gods’ courtesy; Zeus will avenge the unoffending guest.”(Page 1052) This is courageous because the Cyclops is a giant that towers over them and demanding anything from a beast of that size takes much courage and bravery. Another display of courageousness is when Odysseus comes up with the plan to make a weapon out of a stake with a sharp point and puncture the Cyclops’s eye out with it. This takes a great deal of courage and bravery for Odysseus and his remaining men to complete because it is a very difficult and risky task that could end in disaster at any moment. Odysseus also demonstrates courage when trying to avoid the Sirens, the Wandering Rocks, the Scylla, and the Charybdis while trying to sail home. He overcomes these obstacles with courage and intelligence that allows him and some of his men to escape alive. There are countless events in the Odyssey that…

Displaying the characteristic of loyalty is an important quality of being a leader. Odysseus in The Odyssey is loyal to not only his companions, but his wife and homeland as well. In the introduction of the story, told by Muse, she recalls that Odysseus had “... weathered many bitter nights and days in his deep heart at sea.. To bring his shipmates home.” (7-9) Odysseus went through many hardships to allow his shipmates to return to their homes. When Odysseus arrived at the banquet held in his honor by the daughter of Alcinous, he “… weeps as the minstrel’s song reminds him of all of his companions… “ (758) in remembrance of his shipmates that were killed by their own recklessness. He wished that they were able to return to their homes but…
