I believe that Odysseus fits the stereotype when it comes to following the man box. I say this because he does cry but he also doesn’t back down from a challenge. Odysseus is weeping on the island of Ogygia and showing his emotions. The book picks up when they “found him there on the the head land, sitting still, weeping, his eyes never dry.”(Book 5 line 167) This quote shows that he is not listening to the ingredients that are in the man box, which is to never cry and express his emotions. He does show that he is a superior man even after being beat up by the waves. He shows that he’s not afraid and he will stand up to challengers “ up he sprang, cloak and all, sized a discus, huge and heavy, more weight by far than those.”(Book 8 line 216-217)…
Odysseus was a very effective leader. The first example was when Odysseus devised a quick, and cunning plan in the midst of chaos during their imprisonment in Polyphemus’ cave. A leader’s great leadership is the key to success. When Odysseus commanded the men to do as his plan follows, they listened, which resulted in their success in escaping the cave. Odysseus was an effective leader because he was cunning. Another example was when the crew were travelling in the Straits of Scylla and Charybdis. When they were inside the strait, the whole crew were alerted when one of their crew members were eaten by Scylla. In this panicking situation , Odysseus remained calm and told them to row back out, and to remain calm. The crew were sparkled with…
Malala Yousafzai said, “We were scared, but our fear was not as strong as our courage.” To some people, courage is seen in everyday acts of bravery. When a person does what seems to be a brave act during a calamity, without proper training, it is not bravery. It. Is. Courage. Courage is doing something that is dangerous and noble, but not irrational. It should also make you a better person, or the world a better place.…
Odysseus put himself on the line to protect his men day in and day out. He knew about the Sirens and how perilous they are “ Then all at once the wind fell, and a calm came over all the sea, as though some power lulled the swell.” (Homer, The Odyssey part 2). The Sirens make men jump off their ship if they hear the beautiful breathtaking voices. Odysseus had his men tie him up to a pole on the ship and made his men put wax in their ears so they don’t hear the voices. His men would know when it was safe to take out the wax when Odysseus calms down and doesn’t move or do actions like he want’s to jump off the ship. This shows an infinite amount of leadership and bravery from Odysseus because he sacrificed himself for the good of his men. He…
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.” In the book, The Odyssey, written by Homer, we follow a mortal named Odysseus through his journey home to Ithaca. Odysseus faces many obstacles along his way and the way he chooses to combat them may make him appear a hero. Despite his obvious heroic qualities, Odysseus is not the hero you once thought.…
Odysseus, the hero of The Odyssey, has found himself in many interesting, as well as dangerous, predicaments. Although these predicaments were extremely challenging, Odysseus always found a way to survive. His survival depended on his mind and body combined. Without this important balance of thought and strength, it is obvious that Odysseus would not have made it home safely, or he may have not even made it home at all. Throughout The Odyssey, by Homer, Odysseus showed amazing personal qualities that enabled him to survive his adventures.…
Every story needs a hero. In the Odyssey, the characters face challenge after challenge and they had a leader that helped them overcome every obstacle. Odysseus was this leader and he is considered the hero of the story. He is considered the hero because of how he handled the situation with Polyphemus. His journey was dangerous and hard but he persevered through it and was able to overcome every obstacle that was put in his way.…
Odysseus was a leader who would sacrifice anything for his crew just like when he put the spike into the cyclops eye as it said "Just so that his eyeball hissed around the spike." (P.768). Which explained his courageous act against the cyclops. There was other signs of courage for example, when he sacrificed himself for the crews safety agains the Sirens "They tied me up, plumb amidship, back to the mast." (P.784). Which is another sign of courage and shows how much of a hero Odysseus really is.…
Odysseus' potentials and character nature serve as a worldview of the perfect Homeric Greek man. The "god-like Odysseus" is complicated, courageous, clever, and expressive. His increments are a lot of his understandings through travel, the meeting of various societies and people groups and gains from misery and mistakes. Odysseus' strength is continually tested by the lure of ladies. In the Odyssey, batch cases of such attraction mirror the significance of sexual orientation and the part of ladies.…
In the novel The Odyssey, by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald the hero Odysseus goes through struggles, in which he nearly gives up on his fight and somehow resurrects himself. The amount of challenges that Odysseus’ had to face on his journey home were grander than most men would ever face. One example of Odysseus’s feelings of great defeat, happens on Odysseus’ way home and his crew lets the winds out of the bag which were supposed to be kept in the bag as a guide home. These winds created a hurricane, which Odysseus’ ship was thrown into it. “Roused up, despairing in that gloom, I thought: Should I go overside for a quick finish or clench my teeth and stay among the living?” (Fitzgerald, 156). For a moment, Odysseus wanted to give…
Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus is driven to many wanderings during which he sees many wonders and endures many sufferings. Part of Homer’s theme in The Odyssey is the vicissitudes that have promoted Odysseus’s various character traits.…
One trait that Odysseus has is being a great leader. One way that he is a great leader is because he had won the war against the Trojans. The way he won was that he had a brilliant idea of making a Trojan horse. The reason he made a Trojan horse is so he can hide inside of it and attack the Trojan. Another reason why Odysseus is a great leader is because he had helped his crew through many obstacles. One example is when Odysseus and his crew were approaching Scylla and Charybdis and his crew scared because of the white smoke. So then Odysseus…
Odysseus is the one who always went through the struggles of getting his men home, when someone did something they shouldn’t have Odysseus had to pay for it also but he didn’t give up, not even on a few of his men when they did him wrong. An example of what I am trying to say is they were almost back to Ithaca and Odysseus took a nap, well before he went to sleep he told everyone NOT to open the bag, well once he was asleep that’s exactly what they did they opened it and they flew all the way back to the other side.…
In the Epic, Odyssey by Homer Odysseus has to save his men and get them home. Odysseus is a modern day hero hero. He qualifies for the job because first he is brave, cunning, and determined. He made smart decisions and knows how to get out of sticky situations. Second he is brave and he is ready for whatever comes his way. Although the ancient greeks consider odysseus a hero epic hero, according Modern day to Ethos and Logos he fails to measure by modern standards.…
Some may say Odysseus is a hero because he led his men out of captivity inside the cave of Polyphemus. He was clever in thinking of a way out, but he could’ve avoided the whole situation if he wasn’t so stubborn. His crew wanted to take the cyclops's cheese and goats and make a run for it but he thought “Ah how sound that was! Yet I refused. I wished/ to see the caveman and what he had to offer-/no pretty sights, it turned out for my friends.”(pg.151, ln 248-250) He focused too much on his own needs and didn't think of this crew men's safety first. A hero would think of his companions first before the wants of himself. His stubbornness put all of his men at risk which reveals his villainous quality of being stubborn.…
