The Odyssey Essay Odysseus is a good leader because he always faces obstacles head on. Odysseus went to war in Troy. After many years the war is over and Odysseus starts his journey home. In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus begins his journey home facing nature, monsters, and gods. With his skills in all ways of contending, Odysseus survived the journey home and returned to Ithaca. In the following essay I will tell you why Odysseus is a good leader and the traits that makes him so. Those traits are his caution, cleverness, and his fearlessness. One of the traits that makes Odysseus a good leader is his caution. Without his caution he and his men would have died right away. An example of this is when he entered Polyphemus’s cave. [“Why not take these cheeses, get them stowed, come back, throw open all the pens, and make a run for it? We’ll drive the kids and lambs aboard. We say put out again on good salt water! Ah, how sound that was! Yet I refused. I wished to see the caveman, what he had to offer no pretty sight, it turned out , for my friends.”{900}] Another example of this is when they approached the Sirens. Odysseus ordered his men to put beeswax in their ears so they won’t crash the ship. The last and best example might be when he got home to Ithaca. He didn’t rush home right away, but stayed back and thought of plan. If he would have rushed home he would have been killed by the suitors. Without his caution, Odysseus and his crew would have been pressed into more dangerous situations and died. Odysseus is very cautious and he would not have proceeded without a plan. The second traits that makes Odysseus a good leader is his cleverness. Odysseus cleverness got him and his crew out of sticky situations. One example is when he told Polyphemus his name was Nohbdy. (“Cyclops, you ask my honorable name? Remember the gift you promised me and I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy; mother, father, and friends, everyone call me Nohbdy. Pg. 904 Line 358-361). This was very clever of him. When Odysseus and his men stabbed Polyphemus in the eye, the Cyclops called out to his brothers telling them “Nohbdy” stabbed him in the eye. Thinking this was a joke, his brothers didn’t come to help him. If Odysseus would have used his name, Polyphemus brothers would have finished off Odysseus, his crew, and his hopes of returning home. Another example is when Odysseus had to fight the goddess Circe in order to turn his men back to humans. On the way, the god Hermes gave Odysseus a magical plant called a moly to help protect him from Circe’s spell. Circe was caught off guard when she noticed her spell had no effect on him. Odysseus got Circe to turn his men back to humans by having sexual intercourse with her. Being clever is a trait that any good leader should have because it’s sometimes unpredictable. Last but not least, Odysseus best trait that makes him such a effective leader is his fearlessness. No matter what obstacle Odysseus had to face, he faced it head on. He stood up against monsters, gods, and even Mother Nature. He fought the goddess Circe when she turned his men into swines. (“Without a word, I drew my sharpened sword and in one bound held it against her throat {920}) The best example might have been when he stood his ground against the suitors who tried to marry his Penelope and take his throne. (“Not for the whole treasure of your fathers, all you enjoy, lands, flocks, or any gold put up by others, would I hold my hand. There will be killing till the score is paid. You forced yourselves upon this house. Fight your out, or run for it, if you think you’ll escape death. I doubt one man of you skins by. Pg. 943 Line 1281-1287) Without Odysseus ‘s fearlessness he would not have survived his treacherous journey home. In conclusion, Odysseus fought and outsmarted his way home. He was cautious, clever, and fearless. If Odysseus wasn’t such a good leader and didn’t have those traits, he would not have reached his home, Ithaca.

A leader’s great leadership is the key to success. When Odysseus commanded the men to do as his plan follows, they listened, which resulted in their success in escaping the cave. Odysseus was an effective leader because he was cunning. Another example was when the crew were travelling in the Straits of Scylla and Charybdis. When they were inside the strait, the whole crew were alerted when one of their crew members were eaten by Scylla. In this panicking situation , Odysseus remained calm and told them to row back out, and to remain calm. The crew were sparkled with…

Odysseus, in Homer’s The Odyssey, displays both strong and weak leadership skills in certain situations. Odysseus stays protective and caring but isn’t very trusting or open to his crew. He doesn’t tell his crew about what the prophet said, and what was in the bag from the Wind King. When the crew was on the Island of the Sun God, Odysseus blatantly said for them not to touch the cattle. Yet he failed to explain the consequences. Since his actions illustrate both strong and weak leadership, each even affected the way Odysseus would lead the crew.…

This is understandable, through reasoning that Odysseus displays leadership. However, Odysseus is anything a leader, and as a result is not a hero. Odysseus is not a good leader, given that his entire trip relied on help from the gods. The plan for Odysseus to return to Ithaca and save his family from the suitors was completely pioneered by Athena. Without the guidance of Athena specifically, as well as a handful of others, Odysseus would never have been able to return to Ithaca, let alone leave the captivity of Calypso. Therefore, Odysseus is more unheroic than not.…

Odysseus, man of exceptional wit, bravery, and intelligence, epic hero The Odyssey written by Homer, is nothing short of extraordinary. He fearlessly leads his remaining men home to Ithaca, doing everything in his power to get them back alive and well. While this is undoubtedly a noble deed, Odysseus slips up more than he does any good, therefore making it unfit to call him a hero. A hero is someone who is compassionate, selfless, and wise. He is selfish, disloyal, hypocritical and harsh; everything a hero is not. Odysseus may be an epic hero, but he is far from a true one.…

During Odysseus’ journey, he had to work together with his crew just as Magellan had to work with his own. He led his crew and ran into lots of dangers along the way that lead to many adventures, like the Lotus Eaters and the Cyclops. I think he is a good leader because he is strong and can make decisions without hesitation. Though that can be a good thing, it also could be a bad thing because sometimes you need to give some things a second thought or give yourself some time to think them through and make the right decision. I think Magellan also has that same quality.…

What makes a good leader? That’s a very important question when asking the dynamics of the situation that the leader is put in. When looking at the aspects of a leader, a leader does not only lead his men, colleague, and peers to the final destination of where they want and need to be. But a good leader characteristics makes up as having a fair objective and being reasonable. Additionally, it helps knowing who you are working with to bring out their full potential for further success to whatever you are doing as a leader. To be a successful leader, you have to be prepared to fail; not only that but when leading people you need to have the three main fundamental elements to succeed. Those are trust, humbleness, and being able to explain thorough details to who you are accompanied by, even if that mean explanation is harsh. Just as Jonathan Hines, director of sales and marketing at PILLO1 explains “Leadership is expecting as much of your workers as they are capable of, but never of more than you are yourself. It is never asking someone to do something you haven't done yourself, or aren't perfectly willing to do again. Lastly, leadership is understanding that your workers have different ideas and being able to flex to incorporate their ideas in the plan”. Now that’s looking at the business aspect of a leader but that can also be incorporated into Odysseus as a front runner when he is traveling across seas because Odysseus does not illustrate much of these leadership traits as a leader throughout the odyssey.…
