Odyssey
After reading the Odyssey and watching the movie, I have noticed many differences between the two. Whether there are scenes skipped, added, re-modified, or they stay the same to one another, both the book and movie of The Odyssey share the same story.

Character personality traits and conflicts are very similar between the book and movie of the Odyssey. For example, Odysseus's character is very much the same in the book and movie because he is very smart and witty in battles. He also has a problem with women along his journey back home. Penelope is another character that is very similar in the book and movie. She is very emotionally strong and patient in how she waits twenty years for Odysseus to return and had faith that he was still alive. There are also similarities between the conflicts in the movie and book. Odysseus still faces Scylla and Charybdis in his long journey home and how Penelope's internal feeling of Odysseus being gone for so long is the same.

Comparing the book and the movie of the Odyssey, there are many new scenes added in the movie or scenes that were completely cut out or changed. One of the scenes in the text that was changed in the movie is the Lotus Eaters scene. In the text, Odysseus and his men went to an island with Lotus Eaters while in the movie, the lotus blossoms were given by Circe. Which made him and his men stay longer with Circe for five years. That is also different from the text because in the text, Odysseus and his men only stayed with Circe for a year, not five years.

I found this film to be very entertaining for the most part. I like adventurous movies and this one caught my attention with all the adventures and struggles Odysseus has to go through before he can get home to his wife. One of my favorite scenes would be the Cyclopes scene because it demonstrated very well how the Cyclopes are and their way of living and how Odysseus tricks the Cyclopes by telling him his name is Nohbdy. I also enjoyed watching the scene where Penelope is asked hundreds of times to re-marry and choose one of the men to be her next husband, but she has faith in Odysseus and stalls by weaving and is true to her husband. Another reason why I liked this movie is because it is an older movie and I enjoyed watching how they made older movies and the graphics they used to make them. Overall this was a great movie.

Who would have thought that a prison escapee would be modeled after a hero from the ancient Greece era? The movie is both similar to the book in plot line, themes and character traits, although there are also many differences and during certain scenes the movie somewhat mocks the novel. Ulysses (Odysseus’ Latin name) Everett, the hero in O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?, travels a Homeric journey through the Mississippi bible belt. Thus, we find the modern day film depiction of the troubles of a man during the depression is molded by the ancient struggles of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. Though O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? is not and exact reincarnation of the original masterpiece, there are still a vast amount of similarities between the two.…

When movies are made out of books there are many differences, but also many similarities. The director has a very difficult job; he or she has to make sure that parts of the film are recognizable as being in the book as well. The epic poem the Odyssey is a book about the Greek hero Odysseus’s journey home from the Trojan War. So, it is hard to believe that a book so very old can be made into a modern day movie. Though the film and the book have some different things in the plot, they both have to do with the same traditional Greek beliefs. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey Odysseus, the epic hero, travels to many different places and completes some very herculean tasks such as going to the Underworld, battling the suitors, and getting away from Polyphemus, the Cyclops. Though portrayed in different ways, Everett, Delmar, and Pete go on similar journeys in Coen’s film O Brother, Where Art Thou?…

The movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” explains the story of Odysseus in “The Odyssey” through a more modern storyteller. In fact, the movie uses very similar character names so today’s audience can easily relate the movie to the original poem “The Odyssey.” For example, Ulysses is Latin for the name Odysseus. Even Odysseus wife’s name is Peggy, while Ulysses wife’s name is Penny. These similarities are shown throughout the movie not only with character names, but also with the original myths in the stories. Most of the same myths in “The Odyssey” are shown in the movie as well, such as the story of the Cyclops, the Sirens, and many more. While the myths are told differently in the movie, they still maintain the underlying story that was being told. The movie the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” is a modern depiction of Homers “The Odyssey,” which shares several similarities that show the journey of Odysseus to his family in a modern day more realistic setting and shows the relevance and power of the story to today’s audience through examples in the story of the Teiresias, the Cyclops, the Sirens and Circe, and the transformation into an old man.…

First off, “The Odyssey” is an epic poem based on Ancient Greece and “O Brother, Where Art Thou” is a movie based on the Mississippi from the 1900s. In “The Odyssey”, there are gods and mythical creatures involved such as Zeus, Cyclops, etc. On the other hand, for “O Brother, Where Art Thou” there are government officials and criminals involved, instead of fictional creatures. There are some resemblances in the movie and the epic poem, for example there are Cyclops in both the movie and the epic poem. But the Cyclops in the epic poem is a mythical creature while the Cyclops in the epic poem is just a thief with a blind eye. Both the epic poem and the movie have the same sort of characters in the story but the time setting is different and that leads to some differences in the…

The movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou” is remarkably similar to Homer’s “Odyssey” in both plot and character description. Many stories and movies have been based on the same plot as The Odyssey, but one movie in particular did a wonderful job in comparing the two stories, “O Brother, Where Art Thou.” “O Brother, Where Art Thou” is about a man who has to break out of jail to stop his wife from marrying another man and includes his voyage home. “The Odyssey” is about the adventures and misfortunes of Odysseus These two movies, with many of the same events occurring in both allows for the works to be compared easily and thoroughly. The part I liked most about O Brother, Where Art Thou in relation to the Odyssey is the way George Clooney's character brings out the silver tongue aspect of Odysseus' act. He uses jargon and 'big words' that befuddle and charm anyone he directs his words toward. For example, in one of the first scenes of the movie, Everett tries to befuddle the other escapees into electing him as their leader by throwing difficult words at them. To be honest, I was surprised they understood him enough to understand that he was asking to vote on the matter. I never really understood what Odysseus being the smartest and most strategic of group meant while reading the Odyssey. However, O Brother, Where Art Thou did a wonderful job of bringing out this characteristic of Odysseus in a modern context in which the audience could understand better.…

To start, Odysseus was developed with standard Greek heroic traits. First, Odysseus was courageous in the face of opposition, as shown by his encounter with Charybdis and Scylla. The protagonist of The Odyssey commanded his crew to row onwards in the face of the monsters, showing his courage. He was also intelligent, as he devised a plan to escape the wrath of Polyphemus. Odysseus made the Cyclops drunk with his liquor before blinding him and allowing his crew to escape on the underside of the sheep of the island. Finally, the main hero of the story was perseverant, as illustrated when he left Ogygia, battled Poseidon’s storms, and made it to King Alcinous’s island.…

One observation that is glaringly obvious is the abrupt and irregular placing of Odysseus’s interruption to his narrative. He didn’t resolve what he was talking about, find a lull, or otherwise find a good place to pause. The reason he did this is likely similar to the use of cliffhangers in other forms of storytelling; he deliberately left the audience wanting more, and he wanted something from the audience in return. Another observation that can be made is how enthralled the audience was in his tale, so much so that there was complete silence as he finished speaking. This was advantageous to Odysseus, as he needed to appeal to his audience in order to be able to obtain something from them. It is also apparent that Queen Arete in particular is captivated by Odysseus’s tale. She tells her subjects not to urge him away so quickly, which is her way of indirectly asking him to stay and finish his story. The captivation demonstrated by both the queen and her subjects suggests the idea that Odysseus is no longer playing the role of a traveler recounting his woes, but rather of a storyteller that is reciting an epic piece of fiction. It is then the king’s turn to speak, and he suggests that Odysseus must remain in Scheria until the next day so that proper preparations for his departure may be made, as his passage home is now top priority for he and his subjects. This is the prize that Odysseus has earned through his storytelling, and the one that he was likely seeking under the circumstances. Odysseus than expresses appreciation for this reward, stating that he would do much if only he may earn safe passage home. This all but confirms the idea that this is the recompense he was speaking. It is also of note that he included the detail that he would be sent safely and loaded with the Phaeacian’s splendid gifts. Now that he had the king captivated by…
