Adaptation is defined as “Rewriting or reworking of a piece for a different medium.” Classic stories and novels are commonly adapted for film and television, and while the result can be a stunning new work of art, many elements of the original story are changed or lost as a result of the process.
You have read the Odyssey and seen one adapted version. Now it’s your turn! Your assignment is as follows:
You are going to plan a film or television adaptation of the Odyssey using either a pre-established cast of characters from an existing show or a group of actors you select individually. You will write up a plot synopsis that details the changes from the original text, cast the actors and actresses, and pitch your show to the “network executives.”
Required elements:
Plot synopsis describing one scene you will be using and how it will be changed from the original version. The changes you make should be unique, interesting, and logical.
A cast list for at least 3 major characters, and detailed written explanations for one of your three choices. You should choose your actors based on their past work or their characteristics and have concrete reasons for selecting each one. Your explanation should take the form of a short persuasive essay (4 paragraphs), with a clear thesis (who you chose for the role), reasons (why you chose them), a counterclaim (why others may not think this is a good choice), and a strong conclusion.
A storyboard showing at least six frames of the scene you will be using. This can be accomplished any way you want—drawing, computer generated, collage, etc.—but it must be clear and follow the requirements of the rubric.
A short presentation to the class (time permitting)
Please review the rubric on the back of this page carefully.
