1. External conflict A. Throughout the first four books Telemachus faces the struggle of trying to find his father. He is in search if his father and is searching around and talking to different people to find out information about his father and is doing what ever he can to find him. B. This is an external conflict because he struggles with the outside world in trying to find where his father is. Telemachus struggles with other characters along his journey.

2. Simile A. "Men like best a song that rings like morning on the ear." B. This is a simile because Homer is comparing a song to a morning ring because of their sound.

3.Sensory imagery A. "Meanwhile the din grew loud in the shadowy hall as every suitor swore to lie beside her, but Telémakhos turned now and spoke to them." B. This is an example of sensory imagery because the way homer is describing this event, you can picture it happening in your mind. You can paint a picture of the shadowy hallway and the characters talking to each other. You can also imagine hearing the loud noises.

4.Personification

A. "When primal dawn spread on the eastern sky her fingers of pink light, Odysseus' true son stood up, drew on his tunic and his mantle, slung on a sword-belt and a new-edged sword, tied his smooth feet into good rawhide sandals, and left his room, a god'a brilliance upon him." B. This represents personification because it is describing the eastern sky and Odysseus' son in great detail.

5. Internal conflict

A. "Friend, let me put it in the plainest way. My mother says I am his son, I know not surely. Who has known his own engendering? I wish at least I had some happy man as father, growing old in his own house- but unknown death and silence are the fate of him that, since you ask, they call my father." B. In this quote Telemachus is

When reflecting upon Telemachus standing up to the suitors and slowly taking back what rightfully belonged to his family, you see him mature with confidence and courage like his father. He is able to boss around his mother with such confidence it reminds her of her great husband Odysseus. Also with Athena’s help Telemachus is able to achieve what everyone thought was impossible for a young man like him. Her wise influence helps him figure out his role at the palace. “I hold the reins of power in this house,” (28) Telemachus says boldly to his mother in attempt to prove his maturity. This little surge of energy was given to him by his guardian Athena goddess of wisdom and war. She disguised herself as a wise old man then gives Telemachus advice that will help him deal with the destruction of his father’s palace. In this passage lines 13-16 “you suitors who plague my mother, you, you insolent overweening… for this evening let us dine and take our pleasure no more shouting now,”(13-16) with ellipsis’s show that Telemachus was emotionally aware and knew what to do at certain times. He is becoming more self aware like his father, which shows he is maturing in his heart and his mind. Also lines like “All of you destroyed in my house while I go scot-free myself!” (27-28) that have the italicized words put an emphasis on the subject. Showing the suitors he means business when it comes to his family. This shows maturity and confidence he gains with the help of Athena, another thing that shows he’s just like his father. With his goals all set Telemachus takes Athena’s advice to heart and becomes his fathers’ son. He’s new attitude and confidence are shocking everyone, “Astonished she withdrew to her room” (6) this talks about telemachus showing his superior to his mother yet surprising her. And this new found confidence he steps up to the suitors, “Amazed that the prince could speak with so much daring,” (30). He surprises the suitors with a…

I think this tells the reader a lot of information, but one must read between the lines a little bit to truly understand. When Hamlet’s Mother utilizes the word “thou” she is not necessarily referring to her son, instead talking about someone else. On the other hand, when young Hamlet speaks with the word “you”, he is directly addressing his mother, and only her. Hamlet and his mother are sharing a little bit of tense conversations, and the audience is definitely privilege to that emotion through the tone.…

There are numerous points in Book 19 where Telemachus has to take on responsibility in order to help his dad overcome the suitors and win back Penelope. One example of this is displayed when Odysseus is getting ready to fight the suitors and tells Telemachus to “‘Harness the weapons . . . itself can draw men’s hands’” (19. 5-17). Telemachus is taking on responsibility at home by helping his father move the weapons to a spot where the suitors will not be able to reach them during the fight. Another example of Telemachus taking on responsibility is when Odysseus asks him to keep his secret: “Be still: keep still about it . . . Telemachus went across the hall and out/ under the light of the torches-crossed the court/ to the tower chamber where he had always slept” (19. 53-60). Here, Telemachus promises his dad that he will not tell anybody that he is the “beggar.” Telemachus has promised not to tell, because Odysseus cannot afford letting Penelope know that he is home. If Penelope finds out, she might tell the suitors, and they could rebel and destroy the palace. It is important for Telemachus to show responsibility at home because soon, Odysseus will die, and all of the leadership is left for Telemachus.…

Throughout the first four books of The Odyssey Homer described the way the suitors consume everything in Odysseus’ house and bully Telemachus around rendering immediately as a vulnerable character in comparison to his great father. This gives a sign to the leader that Telemachus being a main character will have to accomplish something. For control of the house, Athena sent Odysseus on more adventures and sent Telemachus on his telemachy which means coming of age. It was time for Telemachus to grow up. Even though his departure from his house and Odysseus’ departure from Calypso’s island are written at different times in the book they both left almost simultaneously. A father’s need for a son is very important factor in ancient Greek culture. It represented the continuation of your lineage and when one was so powerful and liked as Odysseus was being a king it was naturally seen that he would raise a strong and mighty child. Not being there to raise one or not having a son can be a root of cataclysm. Both, returning at the Swineherd’s house around the same time, but this time wiser, Athena sent Telemachus and Odysseus on parallel quests using Telemachus’ telemachy in the first four books as a comparison of growth in maturity and wisdom in Odysseus’ return to Ithaca. And as it turns out, fathers are not so different compared to their sons.…
