Sophocles: Oedipus the King The most obvious theme expressed is the symbolism of free will. This issue is manifested in the plot itself and is a central theme in the play. It goes without saying that this problem of free will is still relevant till this day and has been a major topic throughout history. Another central issue dealt with in Oedipus Rex, Oedipus the King, or also known as Oedipus Tyrannus is fate. These two issues will be key issues that will be presented throughout the bibliography of Oedipus the King. When fate is addressed, so is religion due to the questioning of the power of the Gods from characters. I believe atheism also takes a toll in this play because of who and what they believe in.

Oedipus the King is Western Literature’s first detective story and a horrifying tale of one man’s world turn upside down. An oracle came to Laius one fine day and it said that doom would strike him down at the hands of a son, our son, to be born of our own flesh and blood. (Lawall, 631) Once knowing this, Laius and Jacosta gave orders to a shepherd to leave the baby in a field to die. The King and Queen of Corinth, Polybus and Dorian adopted the child and named him Oedipus. This could be an example of free will and also fate. It was the shepherd’s free will to give the baby in good hands instead of leaving it to die. Although, leaving him alive was only playing into the role of the prophecy. How would the story be if Laius and Jacosta actually kept their child, would the oracle have come true? When Oedipus received the rumors he went to the Delphic oracle to find any truth on the rumors. This could also be considered an example because his own free will took him to see the oracle and also he promised himself not to ever set foot in Corinth, which is another example of free will.
