Many people in today’s world and in our past lives can and have been blinded to some kind of truth. The truth could have been right in front of your eyes or blatantly right there to begin with for you to know the truth but somehow you miss out and never figure it out. Being blind to the truth can sometimes be a benefit and can also be a bad thing in many cases. Just like many blind people are weak in one area but stronger with their other senses. In the play Sophocles’ King Oedipus has been blind to the truth his whole entire life unknowing of what his life would have been if otherwise different. The prophecy was said that he would marry his mother and kill his father, this prophecy was true because that’s exactly what ended up happening in his life. His parents were told this prophecy and sent him on a harmful visit to the woods to be left there to die. But that ended up not happening because the Shepherd that was promised to do his duties didn’t end up doing so which resulted in Oedipus living out his prophecy. Oedipus learned of what his life would consist of and just like any teenager would he ran away from home in anger and in worry. Doing so got him into a situation in which he couldn’t return from, he ended up killing his father Laius. The prophecy was being lived without him even knowing, he became king and married his mother Jocasta. Jocasta didn’t know that she had married her son ad that the prophecy was being fulfilled because she thought her young born son was dead. When things didn’t start going Thebes way he then put the blame on the prophecy of why a polluter was on the lands. Even when others tried to tell him or make assumptions of what may be the truth of who he was he then refused there assumptions and chose to get angry. Others would have no choice to assume what and who he was because he was the one that caused all the problems in Thebes. So he was forced to then know and accept the truth of who he was. The blindness topped everything off that was going on in his life, he was forced was again to realize what his life consisted of. The hurt and pain that inflicted upon himself was a constant reminder of what kind of life he lived. His blindness that he had for his life and his mishaps was no comparison to the physical pain that he felt from blinding his eyes. Oedipus was not the only one that was blind to many things, Jocasta was as well. I would say she was physically, mentally, and verbally unaware of what was going on because if she did she would have the shepherds head for not complying to her orders long ago. Because none of this would of happened if he would have done differently. But then again you can’t change fate, if it’s meant to happen it will as we see with these characters. Jocasta was blind just as Oedipus because she had no idea she was married to her son. Her way of punishing herself and coping with their issues was to kill herself. Tiresias blindness was already done to him by way of him being born that
