Laius get in an argument where Laius gives Oedipus a blow to the head with a stone. Enraged by Laius action Oedipus Kills King Laius and his servants acoponiating him. One servant got away, this was a mistake for Oedipus, since this servant will be one of the cause of Oedipus downfall. When he arrived to Thebes, the city had a plague casted by the Sphinx. Oedipus beats Sphinx, not by force but instead by intellect. He correctly answered the monster's riddle which made the Sphinx remove the pledge.
The city, grateful for his wisdom made Oedipus the new King of Thebes. They also convinced him of marrying Jocasta which was Oedipus biological mother. At this point Oedipus has failed to prevent the oracle prediction. Time passes and Oedipus receives a message for him to banish the person who killed Laius former king of Thebes. Oedipus suspects creon of doing such action and confronts him about it. They get in an argument where Creon claims Oedipus is the actual killer. When the messenger of Corinth arrives, his startling announcement claiming that oedipus was not the son of Polybos. Oedipus decides to stop looking for the killer and start looking into his origins. The Corinthian messenger tells Oedipus and Jocasta that he found Oedipus as a baby on Mt. Cithaeron while he was herding sheep. Because the baby's feet were bound and swollen, he named him Oedipus. He claims a shepherd working for Laius was the one who gave it to him. Oedipus ask the messenger if this servant was still alive, the messenger tell Oedipus to ask the elders. When Oedipus confronts the elder, the elder claims he is the leaving servant from the
attack. Jokasta now knows who Oedipus is. Jocasta then asks Oedipus to stop looking into the past afraid for the prophecy to be foretold. When Oedipus finds out the truth, Jocasta cannot take it any longer, her guilt swallowed her up knowing what she did to Oedipus. She also can't confront her people,so she hangs herself. Oedipus regretting over what he has done takes mutilates his eye as self punishment.He becomes blind so he can never have to look at his kids and his people. He doesn't want to see their faces as they understand the truth. He doesn't want to see what will happen to his children now that the people know the truth. Oedipus chose to live his life blind and alone instead of committing suicide like Jocasta. Maybe he feels that death would be too good for him. By living the rest of his life blind in exile he will punish himself for his crimes.
