During the spring of the year 1692,in Salem, Massachusetts, a group of little girls began to accuse their neighbors for witchcraft. Hundreds of people were jailed and eventually 20 were executed. In The Crucible,by Arthur Miller, John proctor is seen as a Tragic Hero because he is able to overcome his flaw ,but his pride led to his death. In the play, it shows that ordinary people can be a Tragic Hero.
A Tragic Hero is a literary character who makes an error of judgement or has a fatal flaw that is combined with fate and external forces, that bring on a tragedy. During the play the crucible, a play written by Arthur miller, the character John Proctor suffers a change in lust , from being happy to miserable. Proctor is an honest and brave

    1. The tragic hero in the Crucible would be John Proctor since he was able to stand for who we was. He stood for an honorable cause, even though he had some minor flaws – not forgiving himself and his affair with Abigail. Proctor was able to lead the book with his heroic characteristics and traits by standing up to what he believed in and choosing the righteous decisions in the appropriate situations. Through the many downfalls Proctor faced, he was able to regain himself by trying the resolute his own problems. An example would be through the committing of adultery with Abigail and how he attempted to still show respect and affection to his wife by protecting her from being thrown in jail. On page 76, Proctor said “My wife will not die for me!     In 1692 in the little town of Salem, Massachusetts tragic events took place that would alter this miniscule town forever (Conforti par. 1). Specifically, the witch trials that spring made it one of the most famous towns in American History. Being accused of witchcraft, many people met their deaths and were hung. The witch trials were started and ended by the actions of one man, John Proctor. This is illustrated in The Crucible, a book written to depict the events of these trials. It would seem that John Proctor would be the tragic hero stopping the witch trials. A tragic hero is someone who is not perfect but yet has reputable standing as did Proctor. To be considered a tragic hero one would also have to have a flaw, leading to one’s own demise, but the tragic fate is not necessarily deserved. (Straker par.1).
