Of Mice and Men
“Of Mice and Men” is a novel by John Steinbeck. Steinbeck uses languages to create images in the responder’s mind. The composer uses languages to create images that communicate main ideas and add richness and depth to their texts. The novel relates mainly to friendship and loneliness portrayed through the relationship between George and Lennie. The composer’s language technique that he uses is American southern vernacular slang that invokes to the 1930’s. Responders can relate to the book which makes it such a great novel to read. Steinbeck uses great detail to describe all the characters that come up in the novel. The related text is an image of a homeless person lying on the street. The composer of this text uses black and white imagery to convey loneliness.
His poetic style uses a detailed description, effective metaphors, similes and imagery. For example, Steinbeck uses the metaphor “the heron jacked itself clear of the water”. (Page 98) The simile he uses “in and out of the beam flies shot like rushing stars” (Page 9) and “as silently as a creeping bear” (Page 98) creates an extended metaphor. The imagery on “the tops of the mountains seemed to blaze with increasing brightness” (pg105) when Steinbeck describes the sun setting, representing the end for Lennie and a new start for George. This helps explain why Steinbeck used very detailed description with the metaphors, similes to create a rich imagery. Steinbeck uses these particular techniques in order to keep the responder drawn to the story and want to keep on reading till the very end.
He creates the setting for each scene with a clear description, and uses languages to invoke imagery to describe the atmosphere. For example “The silence came in to the room and the silence lasted” (Page 94) this was quoted when describing the shooting of Candy’s dog. Another example was after the death of Curley’s wife which Steinbeck quoted “a moment settled and hovered and remained for much more than a moment. Sound

He uses water snakes and a heron, each time a water snake passes by the heron would kill it and eat it. ‘a water snake glided smoothly…head from side to side.’ This means that the water snake is quite scared as he looking around to see if there is danger. This represents Lennie as he was always trying to be calm and wanting to stay out of trouble. This however does not lead to a good place as the water snake dies and so does Lennie but by George and not Curly because he wanted him to die happily and not in vengeance. Steinbeck begins the story is nature and ends it in nature to show how significant it is for the story. One way Steinbeck produces creative commentary is through the use of different settings. The setting is where the story takes place, and in this story, the setting shifts several times as the family travels across the country to California. The story opens with an illustrious description of the setting. Through the description, “A day went by and the wind increased, steady, unbroken by the gusts. The dust from the roads fluffed up and spread out and fell on the weeds beside the fields, and fell into the fields a little way…” (Steinbeck 2), it reveals a horrible event. It sends the Joads and other tenant farmers into despair and into poverty. With their crops ruined, and their entire world covered in dust, farmers like the Joads cannot make do. From the start, the setting reveals the effects of the Great Depression on society. Droughts and lack of production crippled the farmers and economy. As the story progresses, the family moves to Uncle John’s house, which is very unfit for a large number of people. The quote, “…and the house, a square little box, unpainted and bare, and the barn,…

Steinbeck portrays Curley’s wife in multiple ways. In the first appearance of ‘Mice of Men’ he described her symbolically using a metaphor; ‘the rectangle of sunshine in the door way was cut off’. This is already foreshadowing to the reader that Curley’s wife is trouble, for example the metaphor Steinbeck used to describe her can be referred to as light and darkness. In this case Curley’s wife representing the darkness presenting her as destructive further in the book, an example of her being destructive further in the novella is when she threatens to get Crooks ‘Lynched’, when he asked her to leave his room. Steinbeck goes into more description of Curley’s wife; he describes her as having ‘full rouged lips’ and ‘heavily made up’. ‘Rouge’ being a very rich red and also ‘rouge’ being a French word, this makes it obvious to the reader that Curley’s wife doesn’t engage in doing laboured work like the other men on the ranch. He also described her as having ‘red finger nails’ and her shoes had ‘little bouquets of red ostrich feathers’ This shows to the reader that Curley’s wife clearly likes the whole theme of red and is well groomed. She also is playing a part of being a temptress, this being because her appearance mostly involves the colour red (red finger nails) which is usually said to be a seductive and also destructive colour. Another way Steinbeck describes her, is in her clothing. Her clothing symbolises her as a dangerous nature (red ostrich feathers) towards the men. On the other hand Steinbeck makes Curley’s wife seem rather promiscuous and flirtatious, for example; when she was addressing the men about where her husband, Curly was her body structure changed as she ‘put her hands behind her back and leaned forward on the door frame so her body was thrown forward’, she also talks to the men in a ‘nasal’ and ‘brittle’ tone. This shows that Curley’s wife is not only craving for attention from the ranch men but someone to confide in.…

Another way Steinbeck makes it powerful and significant is by using a lot of animal imagery; “Curley stepped over to Lennie like a terrier” using animal references, gives a clear picture to the reader, the way that he “stepped” over to Lennie. Steinbeck also describes the fight in great detail, and at times uses quite aggressive language “Curley was balanced and poised; He smashed down his nose with a right. Blood welled from his nose” The clear descriptive language that he uses makes it clear and powerful to the reader, ” as well as using verbs such as “slashed”, “smashed” and “slugged”, the repetition of the sibilance of the harsh “s” sound creating a notion of violence. By using animal imagery and strong descriptive language, it makes it a power moment…

The word foreshadow is a literary term that describes how the author discreetly gives clues to the readers that something is going to happen before it actually happens. George and Lennie, two men who have become close friends over time, travel together to a ranch to pursue their dream. George is Lennie's caretaker, for Lennie is mentally challenged. Throughout the story, foreshadowing plays a significant role in the most important chapters of George and Lennie's journey together. The three events that foreshadow the future are George telling Lennie to return to the brush if trouble occurs, Candy’s dog getting shot, and Lennie petting a dead mouse.…

What does a person think when they are labeled? No matter bad or good, the reaction is always significant. There is a plethora of interesting characters in the novel Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, but some of them stand out more than others. One of these outstanding characters is Curley’s Wife. Curley’s Wife may not seem to be a character of any importance, given the fact that she does not receive an actual name, however she controls a copious amount of the plot. Some argue that Curley’s Wife is a villain, and some argue that she is a victim. Although Curley’s Wife attracts attention to herself, she is a victim in the ranch due to the fact that she is in a loveless marriage, and her version of the American dream was crushed.…

    - Tension and drama is felt in this piece of extract when Steinbeck begins to use a range of melodramatic words. He begins to show us images being created into our minds of a film scene which we would expect in theatres. For example this can be clearly shown when, 'Her feet battered on the hay and she writhed to be free; and from under Lennie's hand came a muffled screaming.' This quotation shows us that the use of language has been achieved its target to create imagery into the readers mind. Steinbeck's way of writing in this book is simple yet compelling. The language is easy to understand yet portrays the characters into complete action. As many other authors can begin to use poetry in their use of…

To create tension, Steinbeck went against the character(s) personality; he made someone seem out of place in the surroundings, he created some conflict, he made challenge a struggle and a struggle a challenge (everything was complicated and messed up), he used colloquial speech to suggest disagreements, he created something funny going on at the same time as something sad, he created something unimportant going on at the same time as something important, he had the characters share a dirty little secret and then threaten to have it revealed.…

Detail is another one of Steinbeck’s most prominent literary devices. A good example of Steinbeck’s detailed writing is in the scene where George has to kill Lenny, “And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering” (Steinbeck 106). In that scene, Steinbeck describes every little…
