EN110 Composition and Literature Of Mice and Men The Novel “of Mice and Men was written in 1937 by John Steinbeck and was set in the context of California's valley along the Salinas River during the Great Depression of the 1930's, a time when migrant farm workers found it very hard to get work. The story begins beside the Salinas River near Soledad, California where two migrant workers, Lennie Small and George Milton are walking on their way to a nearby ranch. It covers a span of 3 days they plan to get a job on a ranch near Soledad, California where they can earn some money. They have recently escaped from a farm near Weed where Lennie was wrongly accused of rape when he touched a woman to feel her soft dress. George acts as a father figure to Lennie who is his best friend and who is also a mentally disable man. George tries to be a good example to Lennie of how a man should be. He teaches Lennie from what he has learned himself through travelling. Lennie's dream is of owning a farm of his own with George. George often regrets the life he could have had as a carefree man, free of the burden of caring for Lennie.
The theme of the book is the possibility of a dream becoming a reality. George and Lennie dream of owning a farm that they can call their own and where Lennie can raise rabbits and stay out of trouble free from society. Both men constantly kept this dream in front of them. Lennie asks George to repeat the dream over and over. George refuses to spend any money he is saving every dime to buy the land. The dream keeps both of the working it keeps them close. Curley’s wife and Crooks, two cynics, mocked at the dream of Lennie and George as being unrealistic but Candy sees its possibility and its beauty. He offers to give his life savings to help make the dream come true he wants to join
