Back in the 1930’s Steinbeck introduced the characters dreams in the novel ‘of mice and men.’ The novel was set in America, it was the time when men had to travel the country looking for work and it was also the time of the Great Depression. Also the government were trying to tell people that they could achieve the American Dream if they worked hard. The novel was written to show what it was really like to try and live the American Dream at this time. Steinbeck presents characters dreams by explaining them and shows us the barriers preventing them from happening.
In Steinbeck’s novel ‘of mice and men’ one of the characters was introduced with a dream, the character that was introduced was Curley’s wife. Curley’s wife’s dream was that she wanted to be an actress movies and Hollywood were the biggest thing at the time. Actresses and actors were on billboards and showing on Broadway and they appear to have the American Dream glamorous lifestyle, however the barrier to Curley’s wife dream was her mum intercepting her mail when a talent spotter mentioned that he could get her a job in the movie industries. ‘He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he was gonna write to me about it.’ This could be why she wears too much make up and dresses like a ‘whore’ with red shoes with ostrich feathers and red painted fingernails. Maybe she’s trying to still live the glamorous lifestyle even whilst living on the farm. She believes she has talent as an actress because a man she met from Hollywood told her, ‘say’s I was a natural.’ She is still very angry about not making it being an actress and she is seen as lonely: ‘if I’d went, I wouldn’t be living like this, you bet.’ Instead of being a famous glamorous actress, she is a woman who’s only known by the man she had married in a rush; like being a possession of his. The relationship with Curley is not a good one because he does not seem to trust her and she mentions that he
