Of Mice And Men is set mostly on a ranch, which is where men go to make money.
Money is a much-needed resource, and the only way to get it is through working. Money is important for the characters of the story to complete their dreams. Hence work is important in “Of Mice And Men”.
When the reader was informed of (Our main characters) George and Lennie’s dream to get a farm and to “Live off the fatta the lan’” (p.15). As there was no way for the reader to estimate how much money was needed for them to accomplish this goal, so the audience could only guess how much was needed. And the only way to loosen up is during the ranch worker’s days off, when the ranch workers can head into town and spend their money on cathouses and brothels. “You give me a good whore house every time […] A guy can go in and get drunk and get everything out of his system all at once, and no messes.” (p.56) This is the only way ranch workers know of to relieve stress, and the only requirement for this therapy is money, all a ranch worker needs for a trip to a flophouse is money, this money that the ranch workers are spending is hard earned cash which would set their dreams back “and get everything out of his system all at once […] And he knows how much it’s gonna set him back” (p.56). Furthermore, mental health is important for these ranch workers to continue to work in such a harsh environment, so spending during a ranch worker’s day off is inevitable, and money is earned through working. This paragraph shows that not only are money and work are related; mental health is now also a part of this equation. Because it is in a man’s psyche to work, men do not want to feel useless, be useless.

In conclusion, Steinback shows us the importance of work through the desperate money, as money is an important resource. It is used for many things the Ranch workers want and
