Brief Plot Summary: It starts when two men, George and Lennie, are walking to a ranch in order to look for work. George makes all of the decisions for Lennie, a mentally handicapped man. While Lennie tries to think of a way to explain the dead puppy to George, Curley's wife enters. When Lennie tells her how much he likes soft things, she tells him he can touch her hair. But, when Lennie pets it too hard, she gets angry. She tries to move away, but in fear, Lennie clings onto her hair. Curley's wife then starts to scream. To keep her from screaming and getting him in trouble, Lennie holds her so tightly that he breaks her neck. When he realizes that he has done something bad, he goes to the clearing in the woods.
When Candy finds the dead body of Curley's wife, he goes to get George. Candy knows that Curley will call for a party to lynch Lennie. George says that he is not going to let anybody hurt Lennie. When Curley comes into the barn and sees his dead wife, he promises himself to hunt down and kill Lennie slowly and painfully.
George heads straight for the riverside where he finds Lennie waiting for him. Lennie knows he has done something bad and expects George to yell at him. He tells Lennie to look out over the river and imagine their dream farm. As George starts to describe it, he shoots Lennie at the back of his head.
