The story Of Mice and Men, written by john steinbeck is a exceptional piece of literature based on the theme of dreams. This story was published in 1937 towards the end of the great depression. The farm is set just outside a california city called soledad. The people during this time didn't have much and were plagued with poverty and famine. Although they had to survive through these scarce times the people managed to hold on to hope and dream, this dream was the American dream. The dream did not consist of much, people only wanted a small piece of land and the ability to provide for themselves and their family. This dream shaped the plot throughout the story and made the characters who they were, although not the only dream found in the story this one is clear and defined boldly by the two main characters George and Lennie.
The idea of that farm gave the two men hope, good outlook on life and something to work hard for. In chapter one a quote from lennie shows us his interest in this dream and the giddy excitement it brings him “Lennie spoke craftily, ‘Tell me--like you done before.’ ‘tell you what?’ ‘about the rabbits.’ ”. This was the start of what became a long plotted out dream that the two men worked hard for. On page 15 of the book george says “Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. They got no family. They don’t belong no place. . . With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.” George even says that he and Lennie have a future together referring to the farm.
