Crooks Diary Entry
Tonight Lennie an’ Candy came in to my room. I argued with Lennie first tellin’ him he aint got no right to come in to my room. But the stubborn guy didn’t understand and jus’ came in anyway. He was sayin’ he wanted to tend some pup of his. I let him stay and come in. Lennie started talkin’ to me bout rabbits and a place he, candy and George was gonna get. I told him he was nuts, jus’ nuts. But Lennie kept sayin’ an’ repeatin’ ‘it aint no lie’ and ‘were gonna do it’. I don’t know what made me listen to him and open up bout’ my past but I did anyways. He made me kinda’ feel comfortable and relaxed. I decided to tease him, an’ I started jokin’ bout George not comin’ back. Course the big fella belived me. Gullible. But then lennie started to get mad, real mad. He scared the hell outa’ me!! So I reassured him I was kiddin around with him. Candy then joined us bein’ all polite to me so I let him stay too. Hell I needed some company. We was all talkin’ bout’ the dream. An’ I started to really believe it. Sayin’ I would help out on the farm do some odd jobs for them. An’ then Curley’s wife walked in. Candy stood up to her tellin her she had no right to be here. But she didn’t listen. She was makin’ me real mad so I snapped on her. Shoutin’ at her to get out. The Tart then silenced me sayin’ I was a nigger and I had no right. Hell with her!!! I stayed quiet until she left. George then showed up tellin ‘Lennie off for bein’ here. I said it was alright and they all left. But before candy left I tol’ him I was jus’ kiddin’ bout’ doin’ them odd jobs on the farm. An’ I tol’ him to forget it. I’m a stable buck nigger. Dreams like those can’t come true for people like me.

Crooks is isolated because of color and his disability. He is physically divided from his fellow co workers and lives in a separate bunkhouse. His loneliness forces him to acquiesce when Lennie tries to make a decent conversation with him. But when Lennie fills Crooks in about the dream farm place, all he does is laughs. It could be because he saw too many men say that but they end up working for someone or just simply ended up in ditch. Crooks is understandably cynical and shows apprehension about how others treat him in return. He cannot see beyond the preconception he has always encountered in the past. Ways that Crooks copes with his seclusion is by reading books. The other guys can't read but he can which gives him a huge advantage of…

The Swiss psychiatrist and influential thinker of the twientieth century, Dr. Carl Jung, contended that the healthy man does not torture others--generally, it is the tortured who turn into torturers. His statement proves true with the personages of Crooks and Curley. When the racially isolated Crooks, the stable worker, finds Lennie in the barn, he is hostile and then taunts him cruelly:…

Crooks, Candy, Curley's wife, and Lennie are all stereotypically displayed as what they come off as at first, the colored man, the migrant worker, the woman, and the one with cognitive disabilities. All of them are clearly underprivileged in some way, either by their sex, gender, brains, or where they come from.…

The tragic complex character of Crooks is introduced in the novella as a paradox, he is extremely intelligent yet he has such a low status, generally someone with intelligence is higher up in society but because he is coloured, he is below the uneducated people and the women. The women were considered to have a low status but on the ranch as Curley’s wife is considered to be quite powerful. He is also a paradox because he is lonely but doesn’t want company…

In this section of the novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck presents the black Stable Buck, Crooks, as petulant, lonely, yet he is not portrayed by Steinbeck in a stereotypical manor. In the setting description of Crooks’ isolated bunk, it is described that he owns a “tattered dictionary” and a book on Californian Law. This demonstrates to the audience how he is well educated. A working-class black person during the Depression era of 1930s America would have been unlikely to grow up with many educational opportunities, but this interesting detail suggests Crooks’ desire to self-educate and self-improve. It also suggests that he cares about his legal rights as a citizen, which may have been threatened or undermined at various times within his life. The pessimistic adjective “dirty” is ambiguous and could have been intended by Steinbeck for two reasons. Firstly, it could show physical dirt, showing the long length of time that he has owned it for. However, it also suggests that he has spent a lot of time reading the books due to the underlined theme of loneliness. These books, as well as an educational motivation could also act as a distraction from the isolation and impertinent attitudes directed at him by the white ranch hands. This idea of loneliness would make the reader sympathize with Crooks and would give them a better understanding of blacks working on ranches in America during the Great Depression. However it would also aid with the comprehension of eliminating black stereotypes as Crooks character, devised by Steinbeck, contradicts this unjust concept they were stereotyped around.…

Of Mice and Men was an inspiring book written by John Steinbeck about George and Lennie trying to get by in the Great Depression. George and Lennie had been friends for a very long time and had grown to depend on each other. Throughout the book Lennie asked George to tell him about them, about how they were going to get a place and live together, and how Lennie would get to tend the rabbits. They never got to do that, as life would have it, reality got in the way. In the end of the book George betrays his best friend and kills Lennie. I believe it was consider murder for multiple reasons the first being that you never ever kill somebody, the second is that George said that he could live in peace by himself if Lennie weren’t around and the last being that Lennie was mentally challenged and he didn’t know what he was doing.…

In the book Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Steinbeck uses descriptive language and diction to explain Crook’s room. After reading the two paragraphs explaining Crooks’s room, a reader can infer that Crooks is caring, lonely and informed about his rights. Crooks’s room is described as “a little shed” with many personal possessions.” Furthermore, unlike the other men on the ranch he has books which consist of “a tattered dictionary and a mauled copy of the California civil code for 1905” and medicine for the horses.…

Steinbeck finally shows how socially incapable Crooks is when he describes him as merely the “backup”. Since Slim is in the bunkhouse discussing with George and Lennie, he is not available to play the beloved game of horseshoes. Due to this, Crooks is the only one to take his place. The readers are then shown the discomfort Carlson has with him playing, he exclaims in frustration “Jesus, how that nigger can toss shoes” (44). With the anger in Carlson’s voice, and the fact that Slim is not playing, the conclusion can be drawn that Crooks only plays with needed or convenient for others. Steinbeck shows that Crooks is socially isolated not because of how good he is, which is shown in the quote, but only because of his skin tone being different.…
