Of Mice And Men Euthanasia Legal Analysis
Did you know that euthanasia is only legal in 7 countries and in 4 states in the United States? The novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck explores the topic of mercy killing through the moment when George is forced to kill Lennie because of an accident that Lennie caused. The article titled “Where is Euthanasia Legal?” defines Euthanasia as the act of intentionally ending a person’s life to help relieve pain or suffering. Euthanasia is justified in some situations because people’s bodies should not suffer on life support or from a terminal disease. One instance when euthanasia is justified is whether or not the person is on life support. According to the article “Where is Euthanasia Legal?” the author states, “This law was passed by the Supreme Court of India in 2011 as a means to legally withdraw life support in patients who are in a permanent vegetative state.” This is significant because when a person is non responsive or not aware, also known as being in vegetative state, because their brain is damaged, they are automatically put on life support. However, while some people have written instructions that they don’t want to be on life support, doctors should not put them on it if they have those instructions because the doctors cannot force the patient to be on life support. From the same article “ Where is Euthanasia Legal”, the author explains, “However it is …show more content…
Being on life support is when your brain is damaged and may not recover which your body would be in a lot of pain. Someone’s family and themselves don’t want to be in extreme pain or suffering when they have tried every option. As shown in the beginning, euthanasia is an act to intentionally end a person's life to refrain from suffering. With that, euthanasia should be legalized so people do not have to be in extreme

With that being said, there are two main types of euthanasia called active euthanasia and passive euthanasia. Active euthanasia describes actively attempting to end a patient’s life by means of drugs or a lethal injection. Passive euthanasia is defined as removing or withholding a medicine or treatment that could have prolonged the patient’s life. Recently, there has been much debate on whether or not passive euthanasia is as morally wrong as active euthanasia. Some claim that passive euthanasia is not a direct violation of the basic good of human life, therefore it is morally permissible. They declare active euthanasia, on the other hand, is a direct violation, and therefore is not morally permissible. I will concede that this statement is technically true in a few rare situations, but in the majority of passive euthanasia cases, the patient is being taken off life support because he is tired of living and simply wants to die. And if that is the case, who’s to tell some terminally ill patient that he’s just going to have to live out his remaining days off treatment in pain and without hope. If a terminal patient wants to die, he should be accommodated not simply ignored. If some patients would like to refuse treatment, and live out the rest of their days naturally, that’s their decision too. It’s the patient’s life. Doctors should act on the requests of their patients, not what…

The main argument for euthanasia to be legal is that many people believe that everyone should have the right to decide when they want to die. Many argue that because we can determine the course of our lives by our own free will, we have the right to live our lives and determine our own course. It then follows that we also have as human beings, the fundamental right to determine how we die. The argument of people who are very anti-euthanasia is that euthanasia is immoral because life must be preserved and protected. For something to be immoral, it would have to violate moral laws or norms. The preservation of life is, however, the decision of the patient who has full control and not the physician.…

Euthanasia saves people from pain and suffering while dying. Richard Nicholas in his article “a quick and painless death” (euthanasia), reveal different real stories of patients who were given dozens of painkillers and muscle relaxants that eventually cause death of a person. Nicholas in his article clearly state that desire of death for a patient who is suffering from an incurable disease for a long time, is normal. Before the act of euthanasia, doctors apply resuscitative effort even when they know that patient is…

Euthanasia is a serious issue, but is what George did to Lennie considered as euthanasia? The character Lennie from John Steinbeck book “Of Mice and Men” had been suffering from a developmental delay for all of his life and this eventually led to him murdering a woman and several animals. When Lennie tried to run he found himself cornered on a mountain top over a river. Another one of Steinbeck's characters, Lennie's best friend George, had to choose between killing Lennie himself or letting the others get to him and torture him to a much more painful death. George had decided to shoot Lennie in the back of the head so he can die more peaceful, painless death while imagining what his dream had been for most of his life. Both Lennie and George had dreamed of owning their own farm and getting rabbits so…

Euthanasia advocates Patients are constantly receiving criticism from those who believe that euthanasia is not ethical and should be illegal everywhere. Euthanasia can be defined as the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease. The practice of euthanasia is illegal in most countries. Euthanasia can be either voluntary, non-voluntary, or involuntary. Voluntary euthanasia occurs when the patient requests to die. Non-voluntary euthanasia occurs when a patient is either unconscious or unable to make a choice regarding their death and an appropriate person makes this decision for them. Involuntary euthanasia occurs when the patient wishes to live but is killed anyway and is considered murder. There are different…

Euthanasia is a social issue in today’s world because not only does it affect the lives of those who are terminally ill and/or comatose, and the physicians who have been entrusted with their care, but it also affects the patient’s ability to have control over their own life, whether they are aware of this decision or not, which is one of the reasons why euthanasia has become such a controversial issue around the globe. Caddell and Newton (1995) define euthanasia as “any treatment initiated by a physician with the intent of hastening the death of another human being who is terminally ill and in severe pain or distress with the motive of relieving that person from great suffering” (p. 1,672). Even though the concept of great…

Firstly, what exactly is euthanasia? Euthanasia, as defined by the Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, is when a patient is intentionally killed by another person. This definition says that euthanasia can be requested by the patient, requested by someone else for the patient, or carried out without the patient’s permission. They later go on to define assisted suicide. Assisted suicide is when a patient is provided with instructions on how to intentionally kill themselves. In this paper, euthanasia refers to a mixture of the two definitions. Euthanasia is the intentional killing of a patient by a health-care worker, upon the patient’s request, where the patient is informed exactly how things will be carried out before the procedure is conducted.…

Euthanasia is derived from a Greek term meaning “good death”. It is the painless killing of a patient who is suffering. A couple of examples of suffering can be the result of a painful disease or in an irreversible coma. In most countries, euthanasia is illegal. Only three states in the United States allow euthanasia. These three states are Oregon, Washington, and Montana. Individuals with a severe debilitating or terminal medical illness should be allowed the option for doctor assistance suicide or voluntary euthanasia.…

The issue I am discussing today is euthanasia. Euthanasia is a practice of terminating a life of a person in a painless or minimally painful way, usually by lethal injection. In some countries it is criminalised, but I believe that euthanasia should be legal, and a basic human right. Euthanasia is a controversial issue because of conflicting moral feelings between different cultures. People say that dying by euthanasia is to die with dignity, instead of living an artificial life on respirators and other life support machines. If a person is terminally ill, and there is nothing anyone can do for them, why should they have to suffer? The text I am focussing on is a very famous book called of mice and men. This book is about a time in the great…

Euthanasia is a topic that is rarely covered in the news. The moral ramifications of killing someone, even for the sake of mercy, seems too heavy of a topic for in depth discussion. No one wants to think about the day they will die, however when someone becomes terminally ill it can soon become their only thought. When pain and suffering enter this scenario, the option of ending a life more quickly may also enter the thought process. According to Life and Hope Network “9% of all deaths in America are caused by Euthanasia” 1 We are given the gift of life at birth. I believe Euthanasia is a violation of the most precious gift we are given… life…
