Literary Analysis

The Great Depression was a time of economic and social upheaval. The story Of Mice and Men exemplifies the struggles Americans faced. In this literary master peace the dreams of several characters are shattered. Lennie’s were crushed when he died at the end of the novel he never had his chance to see his and George’s dream house. George’s dreams were destroyed the day he had to kill his best and only friend. Also Curley and his wife’s dreams where shattered when Curley’s wife was killed at the hands of a confused and scared Lennie.

Lennie was always causing trouble in Weed before him and George was chased out of town. When they moved to the new farm he was still causing trouble. In Weed Lennie was accused of raping a girl but, he didn’t all he did was feel her dress because it was soft and Lennie likes soft things. All Lennie wanted to do was feel her dress he didn’t mean to scare her or hurt her. When George and Lennie moved to the new town and the new farm everything seemed to be going all right. It finiley seemed that George and Lennie would get their dream to “Live of ‘da fat of ‘da land” just like they always wanted (Steinbeck 13). At the new farm when Lennie met Curley’s wife she was pretty but George told him to stay away from her (Steinbeck 32).

    Steinbeck present’s Curley’s wife as the only women in the ranch, who occupies a key role in the novella as the catalyst for much discontent for several of the characters and for the tragic ending, because of this men in the ranch constantly think of her as a ‘trouble maker’. George refers to her as a “poison” and that he has “never seen piece of jailbait worse than her” This suggests that if Lennie gets in trouble with Curley’s wife it’s trouble for the both of them as they will lose the chance of saving some money and buying a place together and their dream will be ruined. This makes the reader think about what Lennie did in Weed for George to be so paranoid about getting in trouble on the ranch. Steinbeck uses this incident, as well as others, including the petting of the mouse and the death of the puppy at Lennie's hands to foreshadow Curley's wife's death. Curley’s wife is a woman who is sexually charged and treacherous to any man with whom she might be involved with. Later, in the chapter it’s proved that she is a trouble maker and a woman who is treacherous because she destroyed Crooks dream by forcibly reminding him about how powerless he is, because of the fact that he is black and she also destroyed Candy, Lennie and George’s dream with getting herself killed which shows her as an antagonist of the narrative who put an end to everyone’s…
