Hard Work but No Reward How many times has someone given all that was possible and worked as hard as possible to achieve something, but to no avail, there was no reward? At some point, it has happened to everyone. Nikola Tesla, astronomers searching for extraterrestrial life, and even Lennie and George in Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, have all come upon this unavoidable conflict. George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men are two “Average Joe’s” just trying to work up enough money to buy some land of their own to keep some farm animals on and live a simple life. Lennie is a more childish person who wont let go of his imagination and George is a more serious, realistic person. Together the two make up a single person who has both attributes. This novel is based in the 1930’s; coming out of The Great Depression, it is difficult for many to achieve this “American Dream”. As
Some dreams were or were similar to the one Lennie and George had dreamed of, “Someday-we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and- An’ live off the fatta the lan’,”(Steinbeck 14). But for others it may have been different. However, many work hard toward their own American Dream but to no avail, was unable to achieve this lifelong goal because of financial issues caused by The Great Depression. Which in turn, lead to many giving up on The Dream and working enough to survive while still keeping the tattered and partially forgotten American Dream on the back burner. Many have, are, and will continue to work hard for many different and varying versions of The American Dream, such as Nikola Tesla, astronomers searching for extraterrestrial life, or Lennie and George in Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men. Some may be lucky enough to obtain The Dream but for many more, all that will be found is hard work but no
