Loneliness is a feeling of disconnection and despair due to being away from a group of people or a person for a significant amount of time. Of Mice and Men is a book by John Steinbeck about two friends, Lennie and George, who are travelling together looking for jobs to make money. The significance of loneliness in the book is the George and his relationship with Lennie.
George's connection with Lennie is a good example of denying the feeling of loneliness. He says that he doesn’t care about Lennie but really, he cares about him because he's afraid to be alone. "Course Lennie's a goddamn nuisance most of the time, but you get used to being around with a guy an' you can't get rid of him"(Steinbeck p.41). George is saying that while Lennie annoys

    George, the semi- protagonist, sharing his leading role with Lennie, is emotionally stable, quick witted, and toned. This misconception creates a rather large effect on how the audience perceives him. George and Lennie are attempting to repel against loneliness, by not living in the lifestyle of an itinerant worker. As he engages with the word ‘No’ it clarifies that George is conscious of his loneliness, therefore inducing Lennie to stay with him. Because George was stuck within the years of the great depression, he has a general idea of the structure of how life would change his personality.     Loneliness is a dominant theme in "Of Mice and Men". Most of the characters are lonely and searching for someone who can serve as a companion or just as an audience. In this novel, Steinbeck depicts the essential loneliness of California ranch life in the 1930's. He illustrates how people are driven to find companionship. Throughout the book we are introduced to characters who have no name, this implies they are not important enough to people to call them by their names. Curley's wife is known as Curley's wife because nobody wants anything to do with her. "Why can't I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody, I get awful lonely." Curley's wife admits she is lonely on a ranch full of men and has nobody to vent to. The Boss is only ever mentioned once throughout the whole book so Steinbeck didn't make him important enough to actually give him a name.…

    "Of Mice and Men" essay on Loneliness is a basic part of human life. Every one becomes lonely once in a while but in Steinbeck's novella "Of Mice and Men", he illustrates the loneliness of ranch life in the early 1930's and shows how people are driven to try and find friendship in order to escape from loneliness. Steinbeck creates a lonely and blue atmosphere at many times in the book. He uses names and words such as the town near the ranch called "Soledad", which means loneliness and the card game "Solitaire" Which means by ones self. He makes it clear that all the men on the ranch are lonely, with particular people lonelier than others. In the opening chapter, Steinbeck introduces the idea of loneliness and men who work on ranches living temporary lives, with no aim in life. Steinbeck uses the setting to convey these ideas. As they were walking along the path, it is described as " a path beaten by hard boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool, and beaten hard by tramps who come wearily down from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water" (p.18) This creates a setting and shows how men who work on the ranch have had temporary, isolated and lonely lives. He also writes "an ash-pile made by many fires" (p.18) This shows that many men must have walked through this road to enter a lonely and miserable life, moving from ranch to ranch finding useless work. I think all the people living in the ranch are lonely. This proves this where Steinbeck describes the bunk house where all the workers sleep. "Over each bunk there was nailed an apple box with the opening forward so that it made two shelves for personal belongings of the occupant of the bunk." (p38) The way Steinbeck describes the bunkhouse indicates their lonely lives. Also by only having two shelves for their personal belongings shows their lonely insecure lives.…
