Thesis: In the novel “Of Mice and Men” the author Steinbeck uses many themes sucas friendship, loneliness and the American Dream.
I. Theme
A. Friendship
1. “…cas I want you to say with me.”
2. George considers Lennie a friend even in spite of Lennie’s childish behavior and trouble he causes.
B. friendship
1. “George is both driven by his friendship with Lennie and deeply conflicted about it.” (Kordich 2).
2. George has been taking care and looking out for Lennie for most of his life. At this point George truly wishes that he can get rid of Lennie and lead his own life.
II. Theme
A. The American Dream
1. “…an live of the fatta the lan.”
2. Both men keep this dream in front of them. In fact, Lennie asks George to repeat the dream over and over.
B. The American Dream
1. “George and his fellow ranch hands express another virtue, fairness, as they articulate their version of the American Dream” (Zeitler 1).
2. George plans to run his farm different from how Lennie wants it to be ran.
III. Theme
A. Loneliness
1. “I never get to talk to nobody. I get awful lonely.”
2. Curley’s wife believes the men are afraid to talk to her when when more than one person is present because someone may tell Curley and he’ll come after them.
B. Loneliness
1. “Feeling lonely is a lament that nearly all the characters express” (Kordich 2).
2. Every character in the book experiences loneliness at one point and it’s one of the major themes that is written about in the book.
