been fed up with this old dog and finally made Candy make that final decision. “He ain’t no good to you, Candy. An’ he ain’t good to himself. Why’n’t you shoot him Candy?” However Candy argued a bit. “ No, I couldn’ do that. I had ‘im too long.” He tried to convince Carlson to maybe wait another day but in the end, he let Carlson end it’s life. In this case, taking a life was completely justifiable. The dog could no longer experience happiness no matter how hard it could try. Lennie himself was a lot like Candy’s old dog: without somebody looking out for him, he wouldn't be able to live on his own. George killed Lennie in the name of love and friendship. Therefore, he didn't want to go on living his own life thinking about his friend spending the rest of his life being confused and unhappy. The idea of living off “the fatta the land” was Lennie’s world; that was all the man thought about. So, when George killed him, he made sure that Lennie’s mind was in a good place. George knew that the idea of having their own land was this perfect place so maybe that's what he wanted Lennie to be thinking about moments before death: heaven. The highlights of human life are all based on happiness.
People set goals for happiness and work hard to eventually achieve it. If a person is no longer capable of being happy or helping another be; there is no point in living. For example: if somebody’s mother was dying and she was constantly in pain, they should sign the DNR for her and let her be at peace. That family doesn't want to see her hurt anymore and all they do is worry about her wellbeing. Also, It takes a massive amount of courage and love to take away somebody that makes their life so great. All they want is the best for that person and the only way the know that they will be free is in the afterlife. Killing a person can be justified only if the person is no longer able to experience happiness. Just like Candy’s dog: he could no longer stand on his own two feet let alone run and chase a ball. Also, Lennie: if George wouldn't have shot him, he could have gone in some cave but then would have gotten killed anyways or thrown in jail to rot. A life of happiness being just a figment of imagination is a life that can justifiably come to an
end.
