Crooks did not live in the bunkhouse with the other men, but lived in the harness room of the barn, alone. It was not only not living with the other men--they excluded him from all activities. "S'pose you couldn't even go in the bunkhouse and play rummy 'cause you was black," (pg.72) Crooks said. Crooks just stayed alone in his room, reading, a poor substitute for human conversation.…

The theme of loneliness is shown through Crooks’s character. The items in his room show that he is lonely. For example, all the books show that he has a lot of free time of his own to read. This shows solitary confinement for a big chunk of Crooks’s day. “And scattered about the floor were a number of personal possessions; for being alone, Crooks could leave his things about, and being a stable buck and a cripple, he was more permanent than the other men, and he had accumulated more possessions than he could carry on his back” (pg. 66-67). Crooks is also isolated by his race. "S'pose you didn't have nobody. S'pose you couldn't go into the bunk house and play rummy 'cause you was black. How'd you like that? S'pose you had to sit out here an' read books. Sure you could play horseshoes till it got dark, but then you got to read books. Books ain't no good. A guy needs somebody-to be near him. A guy goes nuts if he ain't got nobody. Don't make no difference who the guy is, long's he's with you. I tell ya, I tell ya a guy gets too lonely an' he gets sick" (pg. 80). Since Crooks is an African American, the guys complain about his “stench” and use that excuse for why he cannot sleep inside like everyone else. Finally Crooks is isolated by his…

In the book, Of Mice and Men, taken place in the late 1930’s, a worker was asked to take care of his boss’ mentally challenged nephew before she died. They both then become migrant workers and both have the dream of owning land and raising animals; but what happens when their chances get ruined by the nephew’s actions? John Steinbeck, the author of the book, illustrates that the worker, George and the mentally challenged nephew, Lennie’s relationship is both an obligation and a friendship.…

The other men exclude Crooks because he is black. He is not allowed to go into the bunkhouse with all the white men because they are racist and follow the racist behaviour of segregation. It is clear that Steinbeck is critisising wider society through his description of Crooks. Crooks has his own room - ‘had his bunk in the harness room’ he lives alone and is no more important than the animals symbolised by the nearness to the animals. He is alone all the time and gets lonely but never admits it because he is too proud. Steinbeck show’s the irony of Candy saying - ‘must be nice to have a room all to your self’. When Lennie comes in to his room, Crooks has right to ask him to leave but instead acts as though he didn’t want Lennie to stay. He says – ‘come on in and set a while…long as you wont get out and leave me alone.’ The ellipsis’ show his hesitation after he admitted he wants the company he realizes and changed it around to say he wants to be alone. This is so Crooks can maintain his pride and his dignity. He his so lonely that he admits to Lennie – ‘just a guy talking to another guy doesn’t matter if he understands.’ This tells us Crooks is happy talking to Lennie even though Lennie does not understand most of the things Crooks is saying. It is the company and the talking to another human that matters to him. Steinbeck also adds that Crooks ‘reads a lot’. Steinbeck implies that even though Crooks is treated badly he could be the most…

Crooks was alone most of the time, because he was different. He felt alone because of the color of his skin. The ranch owner wouldn’t let him in the bunkhouse with the other white ranch workers. The fact that Crooks is black made him feel alone because people used it against him. “Crooks… had his bunk in the harness room; a little shed that leaned off the wall of the barn… Crooks’ bunk was a long box filled with straw, on which blankets were flung” (Steinbeck 66-67) Since Crooks wasn’t allowed in the bunkhouse with the other men, he made sure that no one came into his room. He didn’t want them in there because Crooks’ thought that they would discriminate him. He also wanted to keep all of his belongings to…

Being kept away from everybody makes Crooks unhappy and lonely because he has nobody to spend time with and share his opinion with. This makes him bitter towards all of the white people because he feels they are the reason why he is lonely, and he is upset at the way they have treated him. Crooks is very defensive around white people, and we can see this when Lennie visits Crooks in his shack. When all of the men left to go to the doctor to fix Curley’s hand Lennie wanted to stay with someone, so he decided to go to Crooks’ shack because there was a light on. “(page 100) I ain’t doing nothing….and I just seen your light” Crooks doesn’t want to spend time with Lennie as he is not allowed into the bunk house so Lennie isn’t allowed in his shack “If you guys don’t let me in your house to play cards, why should I let you in mine.” Because of the way white people have treated Crooks, he would rather be alone and sad than have friend that is white who treat him badly.…

This implies he was treated like an animal in the barn with the animals because he has to sleep in the box which is so uncomfortable. He doesn’t have the quality of life. Secondly, the use of the word ‘’STRAW’’ also enlarge the fact of animal imagery as only animals such as horses live in a barn with straw and to think a human being (crooks) is living in these conditions really emphasised the fact that he is being devaluated.…
