The most challenging part of this year was not a single project or internal struggle, but Honors Earth Science in its entirety. Mrs Gentry, the teacher, is strict in grading which pressures me to do the best that I can. Her tests are the ones that I study the most for and the taught topics are mundane, at best the topics are moderately interesting, but only far and few between. I am often puzzled regarding the current topic and must return to notes and previous activities to grasp the curriculum to score well on the looming test. Regarding tests, I have never scored greater than a ‘B’ upon them, even after studying. Currently, I wonder, and hope, that I will score reasonably to maintain a preferable grade. The book is thought-provoking in its use of imagery and foreshadowing; George kills Lennie akin to how Carlson killed Candy’s dog, shooting the back of the neck/head so they don’t feel anything as explained by Carlson. Also, the emphasis on Lennie’s hands and his unbeknownst strength. The characters are interesting and generally believable, the ending is unexpected but not unwarranted. The book has influenced many other shows to parody iconic scenes such as Family Guy and SNL. Also, the book is superior in comparison to the other books I read this year, To Kill a Mockingbird, Speak, and Starship Troopers.
