Narrative Essay Week 1
This essay is about my favorite hobby. How much fun would it be to drive along slowly enjoying the views of nature? While at the same time experiencing the extreme sense of pride you get when something that you made, or built, can overcome almost any terrain obstacle that could be put in your way.
My first legal off-roading trip was with an off-road club called, Ocean State Jeepsters, which to this day I am still a member. It was a bright spring morning in late May of 2012. The day started off early, 6:30A.M. too be exact, with a phone call from one of my best friends.
“Are you ready? I’ll be there in 30 minutes”
“Already half way through my first coffee of the day, see you when you get here”
As I hung up the phone, I headed down stairs to my garage to get my toy ready for the day. There she sat in all her glory. I call it she, as my wife named her “Dakota 2.0”, my 1998 Jeep Wrangler that was built to go just about anywhere you could think of, or dare try to go. She had mismatched body panels from the two different jeeps that were built into one. Also with her over-sized off-road tires, suspension, bumper, and recovery upgrades.

I then proceeded to check all of the internal fluids and did my pre-trip inspection. I then loaded my tools, and spare parts in case of a break down. After all of this was completed, it was time for another cup of coffee and wait for my friend to show up. Once there, we set out to meet the rest of the club at the property we were to explore that day. The meeting spot was already full of club members and their vehicles. Again, it was time for the pre-trip inspections on all vehicles by the club president, this quick inpection included verifying each vehicle meets the requirements for the property. Some properties require over a certain size tire, or specific vehicle upgrades, including, lift size, and locking differentials. Once the

The day I took off on my 4 wheeler, and left my Mom and Dad in the dust. It started out awesome and fun, then turned out to be very scary. It was July 4, 2013, my family and I loaded up our 4 wheelers for a fun day in the great outdoors. We all unloaded our 4 wheelers, then took off out into the desert. I wanted to see how fast I could go around the sharp corners on dirt roads. It was so much. I was having so much fun seeing how fast I could drive my 4 wheeler, around the sharp dirt road corners, I never looked back.…

When I was young, about five years old, I dreamed of racing go-kart at the track in my hometown of Leesport, Pennsylvania. One of my friends was a champion go-kart racer and I always remember thinking how I wanted to feel the rush of racing after I got to sit in his kart. My dad took action and decided as a…

This spring I spent two-weeks in New York visiting my daughter and her family. I spend a lot of time in the city, and I love it, not only because my daughter has chosen to create and raise a family in Brooklyn, but also because of its walkability. I’m not much of a shopper, but I do like to watch other shoppers, particularly those who dress as if they’d like to be watched.…

Weather destruction hits hard some places more then others around the world. In Alpena where I live we rarely have any kind of major weather damage. On June 14, a group of 44 members from Grace Lutheran Church, as well as other churches in Alpena, drove 20 hours to Mayflower, Arkansas where a level 5 tornado had hit. I was one of these, along with my mom and one of my best friends Maddy. For six months we had prepared and fundraised. I did not want to go on this trip, but what I was going to see was much more than what I had imagined--i came back more grateful for the life I have and more aware of the problems that other people deal with.…

I've never been an "outdoors" experience kind of person. Maybe, it's because I'm very sedentary and prefer to stay inside to read and enjoy tranquility. I avoid all types of chaos and crowded places. Nevertheless, my visit to the Camuy River Cave Park (back in 2004) was refreshing and enriching in knowledge, historically, scientifically and spiritually. That experience brought the best out of me, as a human being and a nature lover, by giving the chance of experiencing a whole new level of peace and tranquility.…

I had travelled all across the country, and seen things by first grade that most of my high school classmates still haven’t seen. The cross-country drives allowed me to see everything from Yellowstone National Park, to the mountains of Boulder Colorado, to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Driving around the country in a packed Honda Odyssey minivan gave me the opportunity to see so many national treasures that many people will not see in their entire life, which I am incredibly thankful for.…

When I was in the eighth grade I went on a weeklong mission trip with my youth group to Houston, Texas. This trip was a turning point in my life spiritually and mentally, completely changing my thought process of inner city missions at the time. There is a ministry there called CSM that invites youth groups to come and they will take the group to certain places in the city where they can serve and get a feel for the need there and many places. This trip was very impacting for me and I am still looking back on it and realizing the benefits.…

This Friday my family decided to go on a two week road trip to Canada with various stopovers in between, while I’m stuck at home alone because of school. At first my parents wanted me to go with them, but I had to decline because missing two weeks’ worth of school is basically saying you want to fail the semester. I am kind of bummed that I couldn’t make it to the trip but, I’m also kind of excited to be home alone for two weeks. This is by far the longest I would be left alone and having to ration my money for the two weeks. It’s good practice for college once I transfer out and head off to a dorm or rent an apartment. So far the only thing different I’ve noticed about my solitary life compared to life with my family is that I have a lot…

It was 2009 and I had been in sixth grade for a couple of months. I was on the phone with one of my friends from school when my mom called through my door for me to come out into the living room. I ignored her and kept talking for a few minutes when she called me out again. I rolled my eyes and told my friend I would call her right back. I walked into the living room and it seemed odd to me that both my sisters and dad were all out there too. I watched my mom take a deep breath with my dad by her side. As she began to speak her voice shook and gloss covered her eyes. “The doctors found a lump in my last mammogram.” she said. “It came back as cancer. I’m going to have to get treatment but I’m going to be okay.” No one else said a word, we all…

Immediately, when I turned sixteen I woke up in the morning and saw a pair of shinny silver keys sitting on my desk. I jumped up with excitement and rushed out the door wearing only my boxers, with the keys dangling in my hand. There it was: my brand new GMC Envoy, dark hunter green with a wax that could blind you. I stared at the car with excitement and admiration; it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen, and it was mine. I took it for a test drive around the block and opened it up on the highway only three blocks from my house. It had a V8 under the hood, black leather seats, a Bose sound system and enough horsepower to tow anything I desired. After my first test drive around the neighborhood, I picked up the phone and called my friends. I couldn't wait to show off my new car. With a quick thank you and a hug for my parents, I sprinted out the door. Hearing a faint be careful from my mom in the background, I slammed the front door and raced to my car.…
