However, moving to various areas and having different shifts can create some safety issues for the patrol officers. It creates safety issues because it is impacting the health of patrol officers. The health of patrol officers is important. Cardiovascular and other health problems, low morale, loss of sleep, and on-the-job accidents are problems that can occur when patrol officers have different shifts and are placed in different patrol areas (Walker and Katz, 2013). Going without sleep is a big deal for anyone, but is a huge safety concern for patrol officers. The public needs patrol officers to be wide awake and ready for their job at any time. Anything can happen and it is important that patrol officers are getting enough hours of sleep every night. Going without sleep can encourage abuse (Buren & Stenzel, 1984). One challenge that police officers face daily is the stress that accompanies the job. Many officers face very stressful and intense situations that need to be handled carefully. A police officer may face a crowd that is rioting and looting and is greatly outnumbered. He or she faces the risk of being overrun and this can be detrimental to their emotions. They may be in fear of their life because crowds feed off of each other and can become very aggressive and violent. In some instances the officer will face gunfire and this puts the officer in a life or death situation. If the officer has to kill the subject then the officer may face Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and this can affect their performance of their daily duties and their personal lives. According to (Gersons, 1989) shooting incidents are a rare phenomenon in low violence police work; however, when a shooting incident occurs, the psychological impact for the officers involved may take the form of severe PTSD (Stewart,2011). There are programs that help individuals to cope with PTSD and can get help from The National Institute for Mental Health.…

Most people say that the worst danger to a police officer is the possibility of getting shot. There are a few dangers that police officers face on a day to day basis that bring forth the threat of getting shot or being injured naturally like heat stroke, stress, foot pursuits, vehicle pursuits, bio-hazard exposure or sun exposure, responding to Code3 (lights and siren), making an arrest, duty equipment, and traffic control. All officers wear heavy leather belts and ballistic vests that contain a handgun, radio, handcuffs, pepper spray, and baton. The weight of all of these items can put stress on the feet, back, knees, and hips. Picture wearing this gear weighing about 20 pounds and getting in and out of your police car numerous of times, it will put a wear and tear on your body. Some officers can’t work in law enforcement anymore because of their injuries. Out of all the dangers I listed, the most dangerous ones are responding to Code3 and pursuit driving. Officers have to be aware of the traffic flow and keep control of their vehicle while in pursuit. They are responsible for suspect that they are chasing even though they have no control over the suspect’s vehicle. The safety of the public is always the officer’s priority.…

According to "Science Daily" (2008), “Policing is dangerous work, and the danger lurks not on the streets alone. The pressures of law enforcement put officers at risk for high blood pressure, insomnia, increased levels of destructive stress hormones, heart problems, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide, researchers have found through a decade of studies of police officers” (1). These are some way the mentioned issues affect local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Examples of other affects to agencies would be, corruption, it not only affects law enforcement agencies, the officer, and his department, but it also affects society. Another example is working in a multicultural world affects the meaning, intention and interpretations to law enforcement agencies. They have to have knowledge and understand all three when it comes to a criminal, If not this can cause added stress and…

As law enforcement agencies employ enormous amounts of low-wage employees, police departments stick out for the exclusive stresses and risks related with that type of employment. Every shift an officer works can consist of life-or-death circumstances, with the likelihood of deadly force having to be used on the foundation of split-second judgements. Errors can cause not only the loss of the officer, the suspect, or a civilian eyewitness; it can result in incarceration and legal responsibility in a civil suit.
