figures of authority and power and, role models. (https://cops.usdoj.gov/supportingsafeschools What is a School Resource Officer?) I interviewed Officer Mark Stegmann, a school resource officer at Grand Island Senior High. Due to the fact, of his employment working in a school environment with children and still being able to obtaining the title and his duty as a law enforcement officer. I’ve always been interested in working with young adults and children but at the same time my interest in criminal justice in particular law enforcement as grown as I maturied in age. When interviewing Officer Stegmann I ask several questions, for example a few were regarding duties, education background, hours, and, the positives and negatives of his job occupation. The word normal is an understatement as Officer Stegmann stated “everyday is different”.
A “normal” day for Officer Stegman consisted of waking up early, getting his child ready for school and heading to work and squeezing in a working out before or after work if possible. Officer Stegmann hours on weekdays followed schools hours eight in the morning till around four in the afternoon. In contrast, his weekend hours were as early as six in the morning till roughly around six in the afternoon; getting paid an average of thirty two dollars and eighty five cents an hour. needed. The education background other than his high school diploma was has a Bachelor's in Criminal Justice and a Minor in Physical Education from the University of Nebraska Kearney. He did imply that he wish he would've started working on getting his masters first. He also mentioned that not everything goes and it that it allow involves a long “getting into” process in criminal justice. Officer Stegmann also provided some very valuable and beneficial advice. When asked if he had any helpful tip or advice for anyone interested in criminal justice he replied, “Find your niche, find what YOU love doing and minor in something that you also enjoy or interests you.” I couldn’t agree with him any more. He also has then added that living in a society that is constantly alway changing multiculturally and becoming diverse population similar to the criminal justice system a way to adapt and have adapted is my being more diversity in the criminal system. For example, diversity in law enforcement would help by controlling, understanding and, build trust in society. Like any job there’s always a side of positives and negatives when working in your choice of field.
Some negatives aspects of Officers Stegmann job as a school resource officer included dealing with disrespectful individuals, individuals blaming others for their actions and, lack of responsibility. On the other hand, some positives about being a school resource officer is not only being a figure of authority by also being a mentor to some kids and making a difference. By interviewing Officer Stegmann there is clearly no doubt that Officer Stegman doesn't enjoy or love his job. From, conducting this interview based on the information and knowledge received that any occupation in criminal justice is a difficult job and nothing will be easily handed to
you. Having the privilege to interview Officer Stegmann was a great opportunity giving me insight, advice and, additional knowledge on my choice in pursing a career in criminal justice and law enforcement. The most valued thing you learned from conducting the interview was learning that it takes a certain people with work ethic, confidence, self determination and confidence as well as committed to work in criminal justice. In other words, not everyone can obtain a career in the criminal justice world. I also deeply took the advice given by Officer Stegmann into consideration “Find your niche...find what you love doing..”
