Unwind by Neal Shusterman is a novel about a world gone mad in which children between the ages of thirteen and eighteen can be legally signed over by their parents or guardians. Based on this novel, Shusterman shows redemption through the characters and their actions. From all the character in unwind Lev showed redemption in the book. Lev did redeem himself at the end of the story because he saves Connor from unwinding, starts thinking of others, and he realizes parents are appalling people.
First reason, Lev saves Connor from unwinding because in the beginning of the book Lev is a whole different person with another perspective of unwinding. “Please – you don’t understand – you can’t take me now, I’m being tithed. I’ll miss my harvest! You’ll ruin everything” (Shusterman 36). According to the quote, he believed 10% of everything should be given to God. Therefore, he disliked the way Connor and Risa thought because they were against unwinding. Later, he became close with Connor and Risa which began changing his perspective of what he used think before. Lev soon joins the clappers, when he decides to blow up the unwinding factory he notices Connor and Risa in the building. When Lev finds out he tries to rescue them but especially Connor, since he was close to unwinding. “I probably would have died, but Lev stopped the bleeding. He saved me” (Shusterman 320). The action he took for Connor showed his viewpoint of unwinding changed because the old Lev would of went along with it, since being unwound basically was a purpose for God.
Second reason, starts thinking of others because based on his religion he only cared about himself and 10% given to God. “My name is Lev Caider, and I’ve been kidnapped by two runaway unwinds” (Shusterman 78). Lev didn’t care about Risa and Connor because apparently risking to save him from being unwound wasn’t good enough for him to take a step show
