The experience of moving into the world can challenge individual’s attitudes and beliefs. The novel ‘The story of Tom Brennan’ by J.C Bruke both explore different ways that individuals can Grow when they are taken away from their comfort zones and are made to go into new experiences. The author of ‘The story of Tom Brennan’ does a great job at showing these themes throughout the novel also however this is not the only novel this concept is shown in. as it is also shown within the film “Charlie St. Cloud’ which Is directed by Burr Steers.

The story of Tom Brennan, follow the lives of the Brennan family after a unfortunate turning point for the family after a devastating car accident which following a member of the family to get a serious spinal cord damage this shows a massive challenge as his entire life was just turned around due to the injury that was sustained in the accident, this is also similar to the movie since in ‘Charlie St. Cloud’ the main character lost a family member “His little brother” in a car accident.

Fear is also a big theme through ‘the story of Tom Brennan’ because fear becomes an obstacle for Tom to move into the world, he feels unsure and paranoid about what his class mates have heard about him and his family proof of this is in the text ‘the old man told me that night that Harvey knew about the accident and Daniel. I didn’t feel comfortable about it” this conveys the message that Tom is afraid and uncertain of where his new life is leading him.

“Any Journey includes both realities and possibilities”, the three texts that we have studied in class, the film 'Pleasantville' by Gary Ross and the poems 'Road Not Taken' by Robert Frost and 'Journey to the Interior' by Margaret Atwood, support this idea as these texts include the protagonist having embarked on not only physical and interior journeys in reality but also imaginary. The journey is known to be imaginary for the audience, but for the characters of the text these journeys have led them to be in a different stage in life, not only physical but internally, evolving into different people or having what become completely different people due to these journeys.…

Hi, teacher and fellow classmates. Today I will be talking about how a journey can have positive and negative impact on an individual. Journeys are not just limited to the process of physically travelling as an emotional journey can be seen in self-exploration and imaginative journeys can occur to transport an individual from reality into an unreal world. Michael Gow’s play script of Away, relates to the challenges, goals and discoveries which are achieved by the characters Tom, Coral and Gwen as they endure physical, emotional and imaginative journeys, whilst the film To Kill a Mockingbird, directed by Robert Mulligan in 1962 utilises the innocence of childhood to convey three personal journeys as demonstrated through characterisation and cinematic techniques.…

Discoveries all involve first time experiences or reconciling with someone and is the basis for human growth and acceptance. Michael Gow, who is the author, explores the concept of self-discovery in his play ‘Away’ and how it affects people’s lives. Through the various concepts that come about of discoveries readers will take in the fact that discoveries is far more then a movement from one place to another, rather a opportunity to grow and adapt within themselves and their surroundings. In the play, Gow utilises the characters to demonstrate that going away physically is linked to their mental discoveries. With the help of references to Tom, he also acts as a catalyst for the change in other characters, which is mentioned in the play. Likewise in Ang Lee’s film, Life Of Pi, he portrays how self-discovery is gained through isolation and the will to fight ones worldly desires.…

The multifaceted and enigmatic nature of a journey can amend and enhance an individual’s perceptions of themselves and the world around them. It is through the process of journey that ultimately evokes the change and growth within an individual. This is illustrated in Barn Owl and Mother Who Gave Me Life by Gwen Harwood and The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, through the notions of maturity, regret, and the impact of journeys on the human condition. The extent to which these themes apply is varying to the respective context of the texts. By amalgamating these concepts the authors are able to concoct a universal idea that journeys involve change of some sort whether it be constructive or adverse. The authors have successfully explored these…
