Okonkow was a man of his honor; he made his wealth from his hard work and dedications with his yam farm. He was also a very prominent warrior, and that gave him his name in the clan. He never turned down a challenge, and within one challenge he ended up gaining a son figure and wife. Okonkow was very fear full that his eldest son Nwoye would turn out to be like his father, lazy and unsuccessful. When Okonkow got this “new son,” Ikemefuna, from his neighboring village he was very great full because Ikemefuna was the vision of a son he wanted. Along with finding this “perfect son” Okonkow still let his pride get in the way of that relationship, when an elder member of his clan said that Ikemefuna had to be put to death, he tried to get Ikemefuna to leave and when Ikemefuna came for help, Okonkow turned him down for the sake of his pride and honor. “In his day he was lazy and improvident and was quite incapable of thinking about tomorrow” (Achebe 4), the man in this quote is Okonkow’s father, Unoka. Unoka was a lazy man who had no drive or dedication; this is the complete opposite of what Okonkow was about. In Unkoka’s passing he left many debts for his family to finish paying. Even though this is not what Okonkow saw for his life or his family, this is what could have been the reason that Okonkow was the way he was with keeping his family in line and
