In this passage from “No Name Woman,” Maxine Hong Kingston imagines what old world China was like, and paints a picture of a repressive, strictly ordered society in which people were essentially unable to have private lives. Everything had to be done for the sake of the family’s or village’s well-being. In such a world, Kingston’s aunt represents the worst kind of transgressor, one whose private lusts disrupted the social order and threatened the very existence of the village. Kingston uses interesting and imaginative stylistic techniques to represent the “circle” or “roundness” of Chinese life and the struggle this creates for both the village and No Name Woman.…
Her stepmother struck her hard in the face, her father whipped her multiple times, and her siblings blamed her for their mother’s death. Just wonder she felt, Adeline Yen Mah, with her horrid family, separation from her only loved ones; her aunt and single grandfather, and her genius mind that only her beloved Aunt Baba treasured. “They don’t even know it’s Christmas” sung and performed by the members of band aid in 1984’s is about third world countries suffering from famine and continually dying, and the people in those counties not even knowing or caring that it is Christmas and that the greatest gift to them is life. During the song the singers used and sung lyrics such as “And there won’t be any snow in Africa, the greatest gift they’ll get this year is life” and “Where nothing ever grows, no rain or river flows”. These lyrics are stating that it is hard everyday to live in a place with no rain or rivers, and that their fight for survival is very harsh and hard. Also that they’re greatest gift this year is life makes the audience think of how grateful we are to be able to live everyday while people in Africa are struggling to stay alive along with keeping their family alive.…
“No Name Woman” is a work of literature that tells about Kingston’s upcoming in the Chinese-American culture. The core of the story is about a story that Kingston’s mother is telling her about her aunt. “In China, your father had a sister who killed herself… We say that your father has all brothers because it is as if she had never been born.”(1507) Kingston continued to listen to her mother explain that her aunt was pregnant and accused of adultery because her husband had been away for some time. Kingston’s mother tells her this story solely to teach her a lesson about the responsibilities of becoming a woman. “Don’t let your father know that I told you. He denies her. Now that you have started to menstruate, what happened to her could happen to you.” Kingston’s family wants her to participate in the punishment of her aunt; however, she interprets the story as a different lesson. She relates to her aunt because, like Kingston, her aunt did not want to conform to norms of society. Kingston relates to the spiteful acts of her aunt. She feels that in order for her to understand the moral of the story, then her aunts life must branch into her own. Kingston interprets her own judgement of her aunt. Instead of conforming to her family’s beliefs, she forms her own purpose of the story. Kingston shows great cultural growth by honoring her aunt using…

In the first section of the story Tan introduces the main character Jing-Mei, accompanied by her elderly father Canning Woo on a train to Guangzhou in China where they will visit with some family that Canning has not seen since childhood. Throughout the train ride and even after the two arrived to Guangzhou and met the family, Jing-Mei possessed many stereotypical viewpoints about China and the Chinese culture. En route to Guangzhou, Jing-Mei reminisced about her mother, Suyuan who passed away three months ago, and how she would always remind her Chinese roots saying that someday the Chinese in her will finally be let out because when Jing-Mei was fifteen she would always deny that she had any Chinese in her. The short fictions written in the Tang Dynasty emphasize the strength and the independence of the female characters, specifically their male-like personalities and behaviors. In Chen Xuanyou’s “The Departed Spirit,” Shen Jiji’s “Miss Ren, or The Fox Lady,” and Yuan Zhen’s “The Story of Yingying,” the female protagonists are depicted as male characters in three ways. First, their external and internal intelligence make them different from conventional women. Second, they dominate in the relationships with the male characters. Third, they get rid of the conventional social etiquette by displaying untamed behaviors.…
My paper will seek to examine the competing depiction of women in Pu Songling’s “Lian-Xiang”. It will discuss the difference between Fox and Ghost behavior, and it will highlight the gender relationship within Ancient China. I will show the competing depiction of women in “Lian-Xiang” by comparing and contrasting the Role of Li and Lian-Xiang at the beginning of the story and at the end. Sang’s two lover’s Li and Lian-Xiang are both from the supernatural world. Li is a fox and Lian-Xiang is a ghost. At first, Li’s presence robs Sang of his vitality; however, Sang’s lust for Li makes him unable to let her go, forcing him to the brink of death. Lian-Xiang warns Sang and eventually saves him after his continued disregard for her advice. The women start off as enemies, blaming one another for Sang’s declining health, but end up becoming very intimate. Li is transformed from a cursed fox, into a member of Sang’s household. Both Li and Lian-Xiang seek to become members of the living world. In Pu Songling’s narrative, the uncontrollable and strange become domesticated and ordinary. This story depicts women as seductresses and servants. Similar to the story of “The Magic Sword and the Magic Handbag”, female promiscuity is associated with negative outcomes.…
