Forrester and Santiago show courage when receiving criticism. When Santiago goes 84 days without catching a fish, he suddenly gets looked down upon. He loses the respect he deserves, and he gets laughed at. Though others don’t believe in him, Santiago believes in himself. By believing in himself, Santiago builds up the courage to go far out to sea to try and prove himself worthy of respect. Forrester faces similar misfortunes. Forrester is an amazing writer, however, he still receives criticism from critics, and for forrester, the criticism is hard to take. In addition to finding it hard to accept criticism, Mr. Forrester also feels responsible for the death of his brother. He feels that he could have prevented his brothers death by driving him home, instead of letting him drive himself home. Guilt and criticism hold Forrester hostage in his home, away from any social interaction what so ever, until he meets Jamal. Jamal helps Forrester find himself again. Forrester soon grows eager to help Jamal, and he begins to write again. In the end, despite having a fear of crowds, Forrester reads Jamal’s paper in front of his class, so Jamal is proven worthy of attending the school because of his intelligence. In the end, even if some may argue otherwise, it’s clear that both Santiago and Mr. Forrester showed courage when receiving criticism.
