FOR DISCUSSION
1. In this story the old man represents the innocent people who are the victims of war. How does Hemingway convey the sadness of the old man´s situation? By showing his story, how he lost everything and had no idea of his future. Victims of war stay with nothing and do not have nothing to go. Also by demonstrating how vulnerable is, he does not have a voice to opinion and does what he is told.
2. The old man is worried about what will happen to the animals. In what way is his own fate mirrored in that of the animals he can no longer care for? When he tries to find a solution or response to the future of the animals. Even though he can't care of them anymore, he still is thinking about them and how they could survive.
3. How does the old man´s statement “ I am without politics” emphasize the central meaning of the story? That he has nothing. He does not fight for anything and does not have a reason to be involved in war. He is just a victim and is lost for not having a side.
4. What ironic significance is there to this action taking place on Easter Sunday? Easter is the celebration of liberty, and he is not free at all. He is a victim of something he does not even care of. How would anyone by free if he/she is a victim?

Young people often do not know what to expect of the future. They do not know how to act when something unexpected comes along, and their actions are based on what they do know; usually limited, biased information. This idea is central to the short story, ʺWar,ʺ by Timothy Findley. The young boy, Neil Cable, narrates the day he found out his father had joined the army. He speaks of his actions, feelings, and confusion surrounding that day. At first glance, his actions are all too often misinterpreted as violence and hatred, but after careful consideration, one can see that they are merely his way of dealing with the troubling news. He has not experienced enough in his lifetime to have a true understanding of war, and acts upon what he does know. In the short story, ʺWarʺ, by Timothy Findley, the young boy’s image of war and actions throughout are explained through the use of symbolism.…

The author's Diction heightens the rancher's commitment to protect the people and the doubt he feels about the decision. Although the man's first “instinct” was not to kill the snake, he realized that it was his “duty” to kill it because of the “ominous” danger it posed to the ranch. The man's natural “instinct” and his moral “duty” to protect the ranch do not align, creating the conflict that the reader identifies with. The man recognizes the “ominous” danger posed by the snake, leaving him with an obligation to remove the danger. At first, the rancher's thought was to “let [the snake] go” for the rancher “never killed” an animal and not “obliged” to kill, but he “reflected” that it posed as a threat to the ranch, thus having to remove it. The rancher wanted to “let [the snake] go” for he has “never killed an animal” because he does not “feel the satisfaction” of killing as a sport. The rancher was very hesitant to kill, but he “reflected” that he needed to protect. The man's obligation and regret about killing the snake creates a conflict that generates the readers emotions through Diction; the Imagery further illustrates this conflict.…

“Conflicts” among characters in Hemingway’s “Soldier’s Home” helps the reader to understand the main character’s feelings and physical conditions - depression.
