A. Comprehension questions:
1. Where was the old man sitting and why? The old man was sitting on a bench on the bridge. He has been evacuated from his home in San Carlos because of the Spanish civil war and because of the artillery. He has been walking a 12 kilometres, so he is tired.
2. What task did the narrator have to carry out? He had to explore the bridgehead and find out what point the enemy had advanced.
3. Why was the old man the last person to leave the town? He was taking care of his animals. I also think its because he has a strong love for his city, and that its hard for him to leave it all behind.
4. Why was the old man concerned about the animals? Which animal was he least worried about and why? The two goats, the cat and the four pigeons were his home, his whole life. He had no family he had to provide for, so he raised the animals instead. He is least worried about the cat, because it can provide itself.
5. Did the old man support either side in the conflict? He is neutral. An old man who has no politics and no care in the world for war. He only worries about his family.
6. Why did the narrator want the old man to move on? Because it was a dangerous place to sit. It was right in the middle of it all. People were being evacuated in carts, and the narrator was exploring the bridgehead. Everybody was getting ready for war.
7. What happened when the old man stood up to leave? He was very tired, so his legs swayed back and forth until he sat down again. All the carts evacuating people had left, so there was nothing left to do about him. The fascist were now coming.
8. Is it clearly stated whether the old man survived the war or not? How do you interpret the final sentence in the story? The old man died in the war, because he didn’t leave his spot on the bench. He was 76 years old, had no family and he had lived his life to the fullest. The last sentence states that only one thing
