Through a fishermen’s point of view, the author was able to deliver his message and apply it through modern day society. The main characters best friend, Manolin plays a key role in his life throughout the novel. He was faithfully with Santiago and demonstrated love and compassion for the old man. The Old Man and The Sea highlights a struggle between an old man named Santiago and a vicious and enormous marlin. After eighty-four days without a catch, the old man was ridiculed his fellow fishermen, he was seen as the village’s biggest loser. Although Santiago was unfortunate, Manolin displayed epic care for him; he provided him with food, kept him warm, and remained optimistic while everyone else made fun of him. The next day, Santiago went beyond the shallow water of the coastline, venturing into the Gulf Stream, and drops his lines. This passage of the book is very symbolic because it accentuates on a potential themes of pride and determination. After a big fish, known as the marlin takes the bait, the old man engages in a war with because of its immense size. Days and nights passed, the marlin got weaker and the old man was able to guide it. Understand, Santiago was in pain throughout the battle between him and the marlin. On his way back home with the greatest and largest catch of his life, Santiago encounters few difficulties. Shark predators attacked the marlin and Santiago defended with all he could but he was helpless. The fact that Santiago was defending the marlin from predators displays how much Santiago appreciates the marlin and wants to protect him.
