Many influential songs have been produced recently and ¨Stressed Out¨ performed by 21 Pilots is one of them. It was written by Tyler Joseph to describe the pressure of adulthood as you reach that progression. The song sets a nostalgic tone in the introduction and lasts throughout the song as Joseph explains what the transfer to adulthood feels like. This is one of many songs out right now that explains a clear representation of problems teenagers face on a daily basis.
Joseph accomplishes this by using assonance and strong imagery. The line “Same clothes homegrown a stone’s throw from a creek we used to roam” (Joseph 19) is a perfect example of both because of how it represents his true meaning. The words clothes, homegrown,
stone’s, throw, and roam elongate the O sound and displays how you need to get out in the world and make a living. The imagery in the quote is also strong. You can almost picture him walking through a field next to a creek with his brother. Joseph’s use of assonance and imagery engage the listener and makes them want to keep listening. It soon becomes really catchy and makes the listener analyze the lyrics for their true meanings.
While writing this song, it’s easy to see that Joseph snuck some symbolism into some of the lines. One example is “build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away” (Joseph 34) which is easy to point out because it shows that he doesn’t want to grow up; instead, he wants to fly away and never come back. Bringing up the nostalgic tone again, Joseph uses it to appeal to a wider audience. The tone makes all adults realize that they want to be a child again to relive all the fun times they used to have.
“Stressed Out” is an awesome song that appeals to almost everyone that enjoys music. Its a little taste of every genre and the title itself applies to everyone that has ever lived. We all have to deal with stress sometime in our lives, and Joseph demonstrates this through with each lyric. This is by far one of my favorite songs because of the meanings of the words and it is one of the only songs that can pull it off.
