On The Side Walk Bleeding, By Evan Hunter
On the side walk bleeding by Evan Hunter is a story of a boy’s mistake of joining a gang. A boy called Andy that is 16 years old joined a gang called the royals. There are many risks in beings in this gang, including “The Guardians”. The reason for his death. Andy was stabbed. He was stabbed because he was a part of this gang.
This short story gives a deep and sad response to me because of how young this boy who just died was. “The jacket was a stupid meaningless thing that was robbing him of his life”. In what we read throughout the story a 16 year old boy’s life is ruined by one single mistake, joining a gang. This is a similar connection to reality, as all over the world under age kids are getting into trouble, for example when teenagers make bad choices by getting drunk. This could lead them getting into dangerous situations.

This is very relative to this day because all around the world people are very violent. For example Child abuse, statistics show that every 10 seconds someone around the world commits child abuse and every day at least 1 child dies because of abuse. To me, just the thought of this is disgusting, so that is why the violence in this short story had a big effect on me. Child abuse is not the only type of violence happing around the world every day; Murder is a very common act of violence. A lot of murder is cause by arguments and fights. I know this because some males resolve their problems by physical contact. This happens because males always try to prove that their stronger than the average male, so therefore fighting is a good solution. I think proving that you’re stronger than everyone else’s is very unnecessary because everyone is different in their own way. As a male this really affected me because in the future this could happen to me, my friends, or even my

Men are genetically stronger and their hormonal differences lead them to commit more aggressive, violent crimes. Also, men tend to be less socialized and lack verbal skills. Because of this men tend to lean toward aggression to solve problems rather than talking to diffuse conflict (p 43.) This chapter also talks about age and that as a rule of thumb adolescents, at the age of 18, tend to commit more violent crimes than that of other ages because they are psychologically immature (p…

In return I believe that such examples showcase the effect of biology on little boys and little girls. As we know men tend to be more aggressive than women. To go along with these findings, Marc Breedlove; a behavioral endocrinologist at the University of California explains that society may be just as much to blame for the gender blur. “Yes we’re born with (genetic) predispositions, but its society that amplifies them, exaggerates them. I believe that- except for sex differences in aggression. Those (differences) are too massive to be explained simply by society.” (Blum 105) Blum then goes on to talk about how biological aggression in males contributes to most crimes being committed by males. She explains that in Europe and America for every robbery…

Throughout history, there has been a trend where populations affected by hardship at home have no choice but to leave in search for a better place. In Their Blood is Strong, an essay about the migrant people in the Great Depression, John Steinbeck describes the struggle of starvation in the plentiful garden of California. In another work by Steinbeck, his novel The Grapes of Wrath, he tells the story of the Joads, a family who must leave their farm in Oklahoma in search of work in California during the Great Depression. The Joads start out optimistic about the life they can have in California, but find a grim situation upon arriving. Similarly, Gregory Nava’s movie El Norte follows two Guatemalan siblings, Rosa and Enrique, who flee their home to go to America, but the life they find in the United States isn’t as easy or…

Espada writes that; “Violence is terribly seductive; all of us, especially males, are trained to gaze upon violence until it becomes beautiful” (Espada 41-42). Something beautiful is something that is aesthetically pleasing, violence something very different from what is usually considered beautiful. Violence is ugly and gory and it is pain and suffering, all things that are not aesthetically pleasing. However Espada explains how men “are trained to gaze upon violence until it becomes beautiful,” meaning that men will look at violence until it is aesthetically pleasing to them, until when they look at violence that are pleased. This is a very scary idea, the idea that something so ugly and horrible can begin to appear pleasing to people is worthy of fear. Espada continues, “Beautiful violence is not only the way to victory for armies and football teams; this becomes the solution to everyday problems as well. For many characters on the movie or television screen, problems are solved by shooting them” (42). Hurting people, acting on this violent tendency is easy, it is so much harder to be kind. So much of our society is built around violence, Espada notes “armies and football teams,” two examples of organized activities centred around violence, both essentially…

Violence has been taught since childhood, everywhere people go, everywhere people look, violence is surrounding us in daily life. Throughout the years violence has become a dangerous trend. People use violence everyday as a sense of protection and even because it seems like the thing to do. Violence is so widespread it has become normal, and society is slowly becoming numb to the idea that violence is making our world worse. Many innocent people are being killed and questions are not being asked as well as the right actions are not being taken for the people using violence illogically. When reports come in saying someone was murdered there is always an excuse for a criminal’s actions. Usually the person is mentally ill, had a rough childhood, or saw things as a child that made them use violence. Whether a person is in their right mind or not, violence is not acceptable. Violence is unsafe for our world and makes society live in fear because they worry about the possibility of dying each day. Living in a world where a culture of violence is accepted as the norm will always bring fear to the world. This violence makes us feel like the end is near, and as time goes on it will bring about an apocalypse.…

The theme corresponds to the message the short story validates than it is vividly interpreted to be mainly about what is seen through the characters point of view. Although, the two characters may be portrayed as senseless druggies, their resourceful thinking and sight conveys the reader a different aspect of their trait. Therefore, Johnson lets the reader know the unique visual concept Georgie gave when he saw the pool of blood on the hospital floor. Unlike most minds of the people Georgie is disturbed by how much blood is streaming in a human’s body and mentioned that eventually the gruesome blood will be released when death occurs. On the other hand, the way F-head visualizes the image is based off of the acceptance and normality of death. Moreover, the different visual analysis between Georgie and F-head explains the sentiments that fund their characteristics and their opposite point of…

Domestic violence has been framed to be understood as a women's issue, while men are often overlooked; making this a social conflict in our society. When we think about domestic violence, we think of women who are battered by their husband, boyfriend, or a man they used to involve with. However, every year in the U.S. about 3.2 million men are the victims of an assault by an intimate partner. Most assaults are, though many are more serious and has ended in homicide in some cases. About 15% of men are victims of reported intimate partner violence. Women who abuse men are not much different than their male who abuse women. Men can be hit, kicked, punched, pushed, or bitten by women abusers. Women also use weapons such as knives, guns, or other objects just as men do.…

In addition, the author uses another example when violence is used to prove a boy’s manliness. The author cites a common playground incident in an elementary school in the United States. A place where boys accuse each other of being “sissies”, and violence must be used in order to prove their manliness. The person who does not fight will be called a “sissy”, which is not a quality of a man. Consequently, the person resorts to violence in order to prove his “manliness”. This example is a very common incident which happens throughout the world. Most people could recall this happening in their school when they were younger. Thus, making the argument stronger. “Currents”, proves that the prominent theme is tragedies in youth because even though the girls had no relation to the little boy before his accident, it still effected them. In this short story, the little boy is so terrorized that all he could say was “My brother” (Voskuil 29). This particular quote is youthful and tragic. It is youthful by the way the little boy told the lifeguard his brother was in trouble, but it is also tragic because the reader knows the little boy is implying that there is something wrong with his brother when he said, “my brother.” This short story was a simple one with a lot of emotion behind it. “Currents” proves that tragedies in youth do not just affect the youth, but the adults around as well. In the beginning of the story, the reader is introduced to this man named Gary. All…

Aggression is defined as a form of physical or verbal behavior leading to self-assertion; it is often angry and destructive and intended to be either physically or emotionally injurious, and aimed at domination of one person by another. Traditionally, it has been regarded as self-evident that males are more aggressive than females. A meta-analytic review of gender comparisons deciphered that men are more aggressive than women, but the magnitude of the gender difference is relatively small (Helgeson 2017). According to research studies, males are 2.5 times more likely than females to be classified as highly aggressive (Helgeson 2017). Observational studies of children in grades four through twelve also validate gender differences in aggression. Male students are more likely than female students to use weapons and are also more likely to carry a weapon to school (Helgeson 2017).…

I am pleased to notice your perspective on stereotypes, and the fact that you realize a lot of stereotypes are in fact outdated. Although, you might be right about some stereotypes, a meta-analysis was constructed about differences in aggression. The analysis showed that gender differences in aggression do appear consistently, results stated that d=0.55 for physical aggression (Hyde & Else-Quist, 2013). A reading of 0.55 would be considered moderate, meaning men do in fact are more physically aggressive than females. This meta-analysis gives us insight in all cultures which provides us with an accurate report. The findings of the report have also been widely replicated ending in the same results (Hyde & Else-Quist, 2013). The differences…
