On the Sidewalk Bleeding
On the Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter is a short story about a boy named Andy. Andy was a 16 years old and had just been stabbed below the ribs. Andy was part of a gang called “The Royals”. He just stopped by the shop only to buy some cigarettes and the next moment he’s on the ground bleeding,“He had been stabbed 10 minutes ago.” Andy had a girlfriend named Laura who he had left when he went to get the cigarettes and she was the only thing he could think of,“He wondered if Laura was dancing wondered if she had missed him yet.” A few people had walked past Andy and as they noticed that he was wearing the ‘The Royals jacket’ they refused to help the bleeding teenager and just left him. Andy didn’t know joining a popular gang would lead to the end of his life. The theme of the story “On the Sidewalk, Bleeding” is identity. Andy is angry at everyone for not giving him a chance because of how people identify him. All anyone sees him as, is a member of the gang called the Royals. Andy wants to be known as Andy. The target audience for this short story is around 13+ because I find its a bit too scary and depressing for anyone younger.

The setting of this story takes place on a sidewalk outside an alley, late at night. The setting of the story is very gloomy. It is also raining, which, went with the alley and makes the story very spooky. In this story, the setting makes a huge difference on the book. The author tries to create a scary setting. The rain is the key to the story. We can imagine Andy, lying on the ground with blood spilling out and its being washed away by the rain, witch is also imagery. Imagery is a technique that the author used to show Andy’s thoughts and feelings. “He had known excruciating pain when the knife had torn across his body," “Bubbling of blood between his lips.” This shows the reader that Andy is in a lot of pain because Andy is choking on his own blood that is being coughed up.

Hernando Tellez used imagery to express some of the mood in the story. “I would have to close the door, and the blood would keep inching on the floor, warm, ineradicable, uncontainable, until it reached the street, like a little scarlet stream,” plotted the barber. This serves as an example of Tellez’s visual imagery.”Just Lather, That’s All” also provides auditory imagery such as, “ The razor rasped along, making its customary sound as fluffs of lather mixed with bits of hair gathered along the blade.” This last quote is one of the story’s examples of tactile imagery to express and add to the reader’s conflicted perception of this story.…

Another technique used in the paper is vivid imagery. Sota creates vivid imagery to describe everything he sees, hears, and feels after stealing the apple pie. The author vividly describes details of even the smallest magnitude. At one point he even describes a squirrel “forked into two large bark-scabbed limbs.” Sota’s vivid imagery demonstrates that he knew everything going on around him, because the guilt made him pay close attention to everything happening.…

The theme corresponds to the message the short story validates than it is vividly interpreted to be mainly about what is seen through the characters point of view. Although, the two characters may be portrayed as senseless druggies, their resourceful thinking and sight conveys the reader a different aspect of their trait. Therefore, Johnson lets the reader know the unique visual concept Georgie gave when he saw the pool of blood on the hospital floor. Unlike most minds of the people Georgie is disturbed by how much blood is streaming in a human’s body and mentioned that eventually the gruesome blood will be released when death occurs. On the other hand, the way F-head visualizes the image is based off of the acceptance and normality of death. Moreover, the different visual analysis between Georgie and F-head explains the sentiments that fund their characteristics and their opposite point of…

the Gothic terror is the result of the narrator’s simultaneous love for himself and hatred of his rival. The double shows that love and hate are inseparable and suggests that they may simply be two forms of the most intense form of human emotion. The narrator loves himself, but when feelings of self-hatred arise in him, he projects that hatred onto an imaginary copy of himself. In “The Tell-Tale Heart,” the narrator confesses a love for an old man whom he then violently murders and dismembers. The narrator reveals his madness by attempting to separate the person of the old man, whom he loves, from the old man’s supposedly evil eye, which triggers the narrator’s hatred. This delusional separation enables the narrator to remain unaware of the paradox of claiming to have loved his victim.…
