On Turning Ten, By John Crowe Ransom

It's almost the norm for one to feel as if they don't want to grow up. The idea can be daunting and distressing for both adults and children. I have decided to inquire more into the idea that “Young kids often identify the idea of growing up, getting older with age, with ghastly and grim thing’s such as death, causing them view the whole idea of growing up to be one of a ‘gut-wrenching’ experience” (REFERENCE). This theme is evident in the poems On Turning Ten by Billy Collins, Janet Waking by John Crowe Ransom, in the book Montana 1948 by Larry Watson and can even be found in the book It's Kind Of A Funny Story by Ned Vizzini, which has since been made into a movie.

At the beginning of the poem On Turning Ten, Collin’s makes it easy for
