Pondering whether Jurgis loves her or not, Ona picked not to confide in her significant other. In addition, the book stated that “she(Ona) had to be away from him all the time, and bear her own troubles while he(Jurgis) was bearing his.” Suffering from destitution, lacking joy, and bearing weights, Jurgis and Ona were not ready to relate to each other's circumstance, since they were attempting to keep themselves alive. Jurgis began to drink in order to escape the reality. Large amounts of alcohol would stupefy him and loosen his responsibility to take care of the family. He would be able to laugh and joke around with the working men. However, Jurgis knew he should not drink because he needs to bring money home because he is the man of the house and are responsible to take care of his family. Eventually, he grew a resentment to his married life with Ona because she kept him from being able to drink.

Ona is falling apart physically and mentally as she suffers from depression, illnesses, and lost hope of a better life along the way. Ona had to dragged herself to work everyday since her family needs money. Soon she became numb and lose her purpose in life. In addition, Teta and Jurgis also felt the same way as they were met with silence when they get home from exhaustion.
