At the start of ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman, Felix finds carrot in his soup and he thinks it is his parents and that they are coming to get him from the orphanage on a high mountain in Poland. When Felix finds the carrot in his soup bowl he gets over excited and thinks it a sign from his parents that they are going to come and get him from the orphanage after three years on eight months, which he had been counting ever since they left him there. Barney was always there for the eight kids when they were sick, sad or in need of something, he also gave them a place to sleep when their parent where about to get killed off by the Nazis at the death camps. (pg.116.) “Metal syringes…If a person takes too much say barney. They go into a deep sleep and never wake up.” Barney most likely took the syringes, so that is the kids he was looking after where about to go through a bad time (Death Camps) he would give then a painless death. Barney gives the children hope in the book ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman.
Overall Morris Gleitzman gives ‘Once’ a hint of hope that lasts throughout the book and gives the main character, Felix, hope through all the people he meets and the stories he tells and it’s all because of the carrot he
