One of the most relatable parts when the soldiers on the ship receive the news that Benito Mussolini had resigned. As the news spread more people added on to it. By the time the ship docked the people believed that Mussolini was dead and that the allies had conquered Italy. This reminded me of the game in school were the teacher gives a person on the end a phrase and they whisper it to the person beside them. This continues in a line until it reaches the last person. When it reaches the last person they will tell the teacher the phrase. Most of the time the phrase was completely different than the original. The teachers used this game to show the how gossip can become distorted. I think this event in the book was a prime example of this.
Once There Was a War continues to be a thrilling book. For a person who enjoys history it is a great novel. It continues details important historical events from a person who was actually there. I feel putting his correspondence together was the best way for the author to completely tell the story. I can't wait to see what the book has in
