In Billy Collins’ poem “Divorce”, he describes how marriages usually lead to divorce through his use of symbolism in the poem. Collins begins the poem by symbolizing a married couple as “Once, two spoons in bed” (Line 1). This line is significant because it shows the married couple as the kitchen utensils of spoons. The spoons symbolize how married couples are one team together and like spoons that hold substances the couple hold each other in bed which shows there love for one another. The setting of the spoons in bed also portrays the couple in a peaceful and comfortable setting.
