According to the National Cancer Institute, “In 2015, an estimated 1,658,370 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the United States” (“Cancer Statistics”). What if one of those cases was your mother? Husband? Grandson? What if more horrifically, it was all three? For Mary Kenyon, that devastating thought became a reality. In just three brief years, she lost her mother, husband, and grandson. All three of them battled cancer, and two of the three died from the disease. Through strength, resilience, and a whole lot of faith, Mary overcame grief and shows true heroism by inspiring people and helping them defeat the same obstacles she faced.…
Just last year, my company set up a Breast Cancer walk that both brought recognition of this hardship and helped one of our fellow cadet’s mothers to keep battling through knowing there were hundreds of people supporting her. I was able to assist in the preparation of this event and help keep things in order the day of for a successful night filled with knowledge and fun. This was and still is a serious cause; Those who helped make it possible and attended the event gained a greater respect for each other. At the end of the night, I’m positive many people felt better about themselves for sharing their knowledge, gaining knowledge,…

Our lives can change the world and we do not have to cure cancer to make a difference. Truly, I like to believe that maybe what I am doing with the 365 Venture changes lives in a positive way. I know it has changed my life by altering my perspective from inwardly to outwardly. Everything has become an opportunity to serve and bless others, from smiling at strangers to picking up trash to giving a homeless man a meal. The 365 Venture showed me that my life does not revolve around me and my happiness, but rather it revolves on how I can use my life to serve…
The American Cancer Society is an organization that exists to research preventative, curative and recovery techniques for fighting cancer. Even though this is a nonprofit enterprise, there are still people managing the available resources. For this assignment, we will continue to evaluate the four functions of management and how these functions apply to The American Cancer Society. Over the course of this document, we will describe how the functions affected by the factors of globalization, technology, diversity, innovation and ethics.…
Since I was young, my parents have always taught my sister and I the value of giving your time to help others. When my mom had asked if we would be interested in being volunteers for Carly’s Crossing ten years ago, I would have never guessed the impact I could make not just for pediatric cancer patients and their families at Roswell Park, but the impact volunteering had on myself. Looking back, I have now realized that Carly’s Crossing has helped me to build character.…
The American Cancer Society is a volunteer-based organization that is present across the United States. Its main purpose is to raise money and awareness about the severity and prevalence of cancer. Cancer education and research is where most of the focus and monetary donations are used for. The American Cancer Society strives to fulfill their goal of “less cancer and more birthdays” across all generations and populations (ACS Inc., 2011).…
My sister who also went on the walk for cancer inspired me and she was also in the Honor Society. Because I feel bad for those who don’t have the same opportunities as I do and I am sure that the people who have cancer would do the same thing if they…
In my personal and professional identity I expect to be enriched with openness in the mindset of everyone uniting for one cause. To love, accept and support each other in the fight for breast cancer. Finally, uniting and bringing together peace for those who are in combat and letting them know that they are not alone. There are thousands of people who walk and support this cause and it is essential for them to realize that no matter what culture, race, age, gender, orientation, or even political beliefs they are all there to learn and stand for each other. As a current nursing student and future registered nurse I find that this teaching will enhance my care for patients in a holistic perspective, reflecting on myself and past…
The lives of most people have been impacted by cancer in some way, including my own. While my mother is a breast cancer survivor, cancer has taken the life of my paternal grandfather and the parents of multiple friends. My maternal grandfather is currently battling stage 4 bladder cancer and recently took part in a ground-breaking medical trial that’s allowed him to be cancer free for nearly a year. Developments such as this or the recent breakthrough CRISPR/Cas9 technology, which edits genes by deleting or replacing unwanted sections of the DNA sequence, excite me about the potential of a cancer free…
The next day at lunch was buzzing. Everyone was talking about my home run and our big win, but that wasn't the biggest thing on everyone's tongue.…
I hadn't been feeling like myself. I was nine years old and I had been visiting my neighborhood pediatrician's office very frequently, but apparently nothing was wrong. Then one day, I woke up and realized that I had a bump on my neck; I didn't think much of it but I showed my mom anyways. She then immediately took me to the hospital. In the cab ride to the hospital, all I could think about was what was wrong with me as I looked at the buildings zooming out of sight.…
American Cancer Society, established in 1913, is a national community-based organization that is dedicated to fighting and eliminating cancer through prevention, research, education, advocacy, and service. The organization was established by 15 physicians and businessmen, in New York City, under the name American Society for the Control of Cancer. The name was changed to American Cancer Society in 1945, when the society was reorganized to recognize the new era. The symbol is composed of two serpents and a sword of hope which represent the scientific medical focus and the crusading spirit of the movement against cancer. The society is currently run by volunteers. The number one goal of the organization is to “save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2013). Over the years, the society has become the “global leader in the fight against cancer,” (ACS, 2013), with close to 12 million survivors in the United States alone. The purpose of this paper is to examine the services as well as health, psychosocial, and educational benefits that the organization provides to their clients and the community. The paper will also discuss the application of the available services in a healthcare setting during the patient discharge planning process.…
Oncology nursing is a very significant career. An oncology nurse provides care for patients who have cancer and to those who are at risk for getting the degree. This type of nurse has to have patience and be passionate with their work. They do more than care for cancer patients they will administer chemotherapy, and monitor physical conditions. However in the time it takes to read this paper 10 or more persons will be diagnosed with cancer in America which will make this career more demanding…
