We are away from home for the first time and that can be a scary experience. We really do not know what to expect. And in essence, can relate to the way the characters feel in the book—we too are awaiting our fate being here. At the same time, we are surrounded by peers who are often very different from us. We all come with different backgrounds and baggage, and this book opens our eyes to how we should not be so quick to judge one another. In her book, Divakaruni highlights this key lesson in life here by writing, “From having put my story against others, I can see this much: everyone suffers in different ways. Now I don’t feel so alone.” This is absolutely one of my favorite quotes from the book because it demonstrates how we as humans have this tendency to feel alone when we are suffering—we create this mindset as if we are the only ones who know what it is like to feel pain. When in reality we all suffer, although it may be in variation, we all know what it feels like to hurt. So we should take comfort in knowing that we are not alone is this process of this new chapter of life, that we are all letting go of the past and starting our future.
