In 1979, the population of China was 1 billion, and it’s still growing. This is what led to a government enforced policy known as the onechild policy in 1979. It’s been 35 years since this policy was enforced. There are both positives and negatives about this policy, however, the negatives impact the people of China the most.
In China, boys were always more preferable than girls. It’s apart of China’s culture. After the onechild policy was enforced, gender imbalance was a big problem.
According to Laura FItzpatrick, author of A Brief HIstory of China’s Onechild policy,
“...an April 2009 study published in the British Medical Journal found China still has 32 million more boys than girls under the age of 20.”.(Doc. E). This huge gap between males and females will result in sex discrimination. Since the onechild policy enforces couples to only have one child, they often prefer to have boy. This has caused abortions of baby girls, neglecting girl babies, abandoning them, and even killing them. Also, Men will have a hard time finding women to marry.
The number of young people in China is currently also a problem. In document E, it states, “In 2007 there were six adults of working age for every retiree, but by 2040 that ratio is expected to drop to 2 to 1.”.(Doc.E). Because of this policy, there are more and more older people than younger people. When there are fewer younger people in the workforce, China’s economy will go down. There will also be fewer young people to take care of the elderly, which analysts fear will suffer neglect.
China’s one child policy can be pretty stressful on an onlychild. According to
NPR( National Public Radio), “An internet survey of 7000 chinese only children between the ages of 15 and 25 found that 58 percent admitted to being lonely. A majority also described themselves as being selfish….”.(Doc F). Xioa Xuan, a Beijing onlychild daughter says that she mostly had a lonely childhood. She also stated that “I used to cut myself on my wrist after being yelled at by my mom and dad because i didn’t know who
I should talk to or turn to.”.(Doc F). This shows that the onechild policy does not benefit an onlychild. Most of these onlychildren, like Xiao, wish they had another sibling to share their feelings and emotions with.
It has been 35 years since this policy was enforced back in 1979. The onechild policy may have kept the population stable, but overall has had a negative impact on
China’s economy and society. In the future, China will soon realize that this policy was a mistake.

With having over 1.3 billion people, China is one of the most populous countries in the world (China Population). The enormous population of China has caused overpopulation and has been a major problem in the country for a rather long time. China has already made attempts to slow down there population growth, but they haven’t seemed to be very efficient when doing so. The solution to control the population growth effectively starts with how well the parents are capable of having and raising a child. Programs and being strict about certain rules can really help to amplify population decrease. Overpopulation is when a specific area is way too populated for the resources that are available to the people of that area. (Negative Population). China isn’t capable of providing and keeping up with the high rate of growth in the population that is rising yearly.…

The major problem concerning China is over population. Due to overpopulation, the demand for energy to light every house and for petrol to fuel every car is becoming too great. With added pressure of providing for the people, more natural resources and fossil fuels are used up. There is also a shortage of jobs. China has a population of 1.31 billion people. In 2003, the total of number of unemployed people in China was 744,320,000. The World Bank said that the total unemployment level was close to 10%, though that is only the number of people who are registered as unemployed. The real figure would be substantially greater. China is faced with, because of overpopulation, lack of space. Approximately 137 people live on each square kilometre of China's territory, China ranking 71st on the worlds list of the countries with the highest population densities. The world average is 43 people per square kilometre, making China three times the average figure. Also a pressing issue is the state of poverty in China, (due to the recent focus on a new type of capitalism, there are marked contrasts between rich and poor). The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation states that there is ample food to feed the population. The problem lies then in how effectively the food is distributed. There is also a severe lack of adequate education. In recent years, literacy rates have drastically decreased. Illiteracy for persons aged 15 and over for 1990 was 22.2% and for 2000 it was 8.7%. In 1964 the…

The Chinese society problem was shown on a website which had a research study about the biggest limitation of Chinese employment and the result is that almost two hundred million people will get no job and maybe a hundred and thirty million people get jobs that they do not like, and these numbers are still increasing every day. (“Chinese Sociology”) For example, a quarter of my high school (which is very good high school in China) classmates found jobs with about four thousand U.S. dollars salary per year. And a half of them are unemployed after they graduate from universities. Rests of them are still in school. This information really shows the hard situation in China right now. More than a half new graduated students cannot find jobs, so government decided to lower the retire age in China to provide more opportunities to these young people. This decision can temporary lighten the pressure from employment problem, but it not really solve the original problem and will waste a huge amount of money for the personnel adjustments. Also, China can support those “extra” people for their living costs, but it is not a good for them because the money for them is from all the taxpayer. This amount of money can be used for many national needs such as education, endowment insurances and technological funds. Therefore, the employment problem should be solved by…

China’s population started to increase dramatically after World War II. In 1949, Mao encouraged Chinese families to have as many children as possible. This is because the government thought the population increase would bring money to the country and help China produce more food, build a better army, develop water control, and establish communication systems (Chinese Population). For the next ten years China’s population increased in millions every year. In 1949 the population was around 118 million, which increased to 540 million in 1960’s. In 1970 the population increased again by 290 million, making it a massive increase of 712 million in just 20 years (Issue of Overpopulation).…

In 1980, china relaxed the policy allowing families to have two children if one parent was the only child in his or her family.
