One day

One Day
“One Day” is a novel written by David Nicholls. This is a book full of romance. The story is of two university graduates, Emma and Dexter, who become the best friends, but fail to come together romantically until almost too late. By showing us the same day- St Swiths- over 20 years, it tells the story of their relationship and, through them, the story of a generation.
Emma Morley is one of the main characters in “One Day” and she’s my favourite character in the book.
From the start Emma is depicted to be the brainy of the two. She is not the type of person that Dexter would normally make friends with and that’s what makes her hesitant and she is just pleased that he is there with her at all she is described as wearing thick rimmed, black glasses and has mousy brown hair. Rich men always like to be with pretty women, and Emma’s appearance doesn’t seem beautiful. It symbolises she is not confident that Dexter will love her or not. In my opinion, Emma is a demure and witty scholar with great dreams to change the world, but with for less courage to match. Confidence is a big problem for her. If she face the problem bravely at the beginning, I think she may be with Dexter who she loves earlier and earlier or even wouldn’t die at the end of story.
As the story moves on, it dedicates time to both Emma and Dexter, explaining how their lives have changed over the last year. Each chapter is written on the same day the following year and it fills the reader in on the events they have missed Emma’s character is built up mainly through her job and her personality. She has a big heart which I notice from the beginning when it becomes obvious that she has been in love with Dexter for a while.
Emma’s life is also depicted as being quite sad and lonely. She doesn’t have many friends or boyfriends, the only friend that she thinks she has is Dexter, but then he doesn’t really want to spend any time with her. I always feel sad for her about her loneliness. She desires to get the love from Dexter and also afraid about whether they can be the best friend forever. Loneliness is not fearful and what is fearful is that we don’t know how to overcome the loneliness, thus we should try our best to develop our confidence.
As the story moves on I see that Emma makes something of her life and changes it around. She realises that she can’t work in the Mexican restaurant forever and sets out to do what she really wants to do. She begins writing books to make people laugh which is her dream. She is a determined woman who won’t take no for an answer and knows what she wants.
“One Day” is a novel that brings a mix of laughter and tears but most of all two incredibly well developed main characters. Emma is a good model for females. She makes mistakes, struggles with regret and the realization that no matter how much she wants it, but she’s also smart, independent, strong and kind. It’s all part of what makes her human.
