Introduction The traditional methods of conducting laboratory activities will not be able to provide the avenue for students to enhance independent learning activities and inculcate creativity and innovation. Level 0 is fully prescriptive where problem, ways & means and answers are provided to the students. However, it is still necessary especially to first and second year student.
Objective
To determine compressibility characteristics of soil.
Equipment and material Consolidation device (including ring, porous stones, water reservoir, and load plate), Dial gauge (0.0001 inch = 1.0 on dial), Sample trimming device, glass plate, metal straight edge, Clock, Moisture can, Filter paper.
Theory This test is performed to determine the magnitude and rate of volumes decrease that laterally confined soil specimen undergoes when subjected to different vertical pressures. From the measured data, the consolidation curve can be plotted. This data is useful in determining the compression index, the recompression index and the preconsolidation pressure of the soil. In addition, the data obtained can also be used to determine the coefficient of consolidation and the coefficient of secondary compression of the soil.
Procedure 1. The empty consolidation ring is weighed together with glass plate. 2. The height of ring and it’s inside diameter is measured. 3. The soil sample is extruded from the sampler, generally thin-walled Shelby tube. Determine the initial moisture content and the specific gravity of the soil respectively. 4. A three-inch long sample is cut
