One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest Chapter Summaries
The book starts off within the moment when Soren is falling from the tree and is plummeting towards the ground. He tries to attempt to save himself by beating his underdeveloped wings, but fails. Suddenly he starts recalling every memory from his short life:

Soren, a Barn Owl, was born in the forest kingdom of Tyto two weeks prior to the start of the novel as the middle child of Noctus and Marella. The first chapter described Soren's memories of Eglantine hatching and his time spent in the nest with his family as he fell from his fir tree home. Soren was then picked up by an owl patrol from St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls (St. Aggie's for short). During the flight to the "academy," Soren met another stolen owlet: a young Elf Owl named

Aggie's. To counter this tactic, Gylfie and Soren pretended to march, but stayed in the shadows of the glaucidium. As time passed, Soren realized that he hadn't slipped from the nest but that Kludd, Soren's older brother, had pushed him out. Soren and Gylfie were then assigned to the pelletorium to pick out flecks and other items out of pellets. After asking what flecks were, Soren was subjected to laughter therapy and had his feathers plucked out. During Soren's laughter therapy, Gylfie discovered the library of St. Aggie's, which was in fact a storage room for all the flecks and other items. Most importantly, it was close to the sky: a perfect …show more content…
Plithiver, Soren's family's nest-maid snake, was found; she confirmed Kludd's true nature and suspected that he pushed Eglantine out of the nest as well after having driven her away. As they entered the Desert of Kuneer, they met a Burrowing Owl named Digger who told them that Jatt and Jutt, cousins who served St. Aggie's, had snatched Digger's older brother, Cunny, but then ate Digger's younger brother, Flick. Digger accompanied the three owls in search of his old home from which he ran after the attack. Then, a St. Aggie's patrol arrived consisting of Jatt, Jutt, and a Western Screech Owl by the number of 47-2. The four owls proceeded to defeat the patrol who had chased Digger with the assistance of Hortense's eagles, Streak and Zan. Digger gave up his search after the eagles told him of his parents' deaths. From that moment on, all four owls swore a silent oath to be a band forevermore and flew off into the night to continue their quest to find the Guardians of

It all begins in an insane asylum with a half-Native American schizophrenic named Chief Bromden pretending to be deaf and dumb to avoid the typical harassment the other patients go through by the Black Boys, three African American patients conditioned to be Nurse Ratched’s bodyguards (more like lapdogs), and Nurse Ratched herself, the big breasted, fine-aged nurse who is known as “Big Nurse” in the asylum for having the reputation of running the asylum. The Black Boys are beginning their ritual shaving, as they do every morning, and they decided to start with Chief Bromden. In fear, Bromden goes to hide in the broom closet and he begins reminiscing about his past, growing up on the Columbia River with his father. This memory is cut abruptly when one of the Black Boys finds him in the closet; they put him in the chair to begin shaving him, then a fog begins to cover the room… As the fog clears up, he is relieved because he thought he was taken to the Shock Shop, the room where patients are given electroshock treatment. Right as he begins to relax on the chair, a brand new patient is admitted to the mental institution. He is known as Randall McMurphy, an Irish Ginger who has had a problem with gambling. When he gets there, Ratched makes it her mission to get the Black Boys to shower him, but he continually avoids getting that shower and introduces himself to all of the other patients. He shares his story about how he came from a work farm called “Pendleton” and that he is at this institute because he is “a psychopath”. After introducing himself to all the Acutes and Chronics, Acutes being the patients with temporary or short-term conditions and Chronics being the patients with more severe mental disorders, he circles the Acutes, asking for the “bull goose loony”, which is his fancy lingo for “whomever is in charge among the patients.” Billy Bibbit, one of the Acutes who has a stuttering problem, tells McMurphy that a…

Throughout the novel, birds represent Taylor and more importantly Turtle’s plights; as they grow, the birds used to represent them change as well. Shortly after Taylor takes Turtle under her wing, they come across a family of quail on their picnic and Taylor remarks “I supposed we could have honked and waved and it wouldn’t have raised any more pandemonium than this poor mother already had to deal with … After a long minute or two the quail got her family herded off the road into some scraggly bushes” (129). Kingsolver makes a reference to Taylor and Turtle’s relationship through the usage of the quail family as a symbol, as Taylor sympathizes with the Quail’s motherhood and the burdens brought by her chicks or in Taylor’s case, Turtle. This also gives insight towards Taylor’s thoughts; since she originally had avoided early motherhood the chance encounter with Turtle provided a dilemma in a situation where she must throw away her previous plans. Taylor and Turtle go to the doctor’s to find a clues of Turtle’s past and as the doctor puts Turtle’s x-rays on a window, Taylor sees across into a garden and thinks to herself " There was a cactus with bushy arms…
